Another Great One From Robert Rankin

Rankin is at the top of his game in writing in the British Absurdist style. He breaks down the 4th wall several times here in talking directly to the reader and describing the literary devices and shortcuts he is using but pulls it off well. There are a lot of twists and turns and interesting characters. He also makes references to characters from his other books and you need to be a fan of his work to know what he is talking about when he mentions them. This is a good and really fast read as Rankin keeps things moving thorough the whole book.

BONNIE G. SMITH is the Board of Governors Professor of History at Rutgers University. She is the author of Confessions of a Concierge: Madame Lucie's History of Twentieth-Century France (1985); Changing Lives: Women in European History Since 1700 (1989); The Gender of History: Men, Women, and Historical Practice (1998); Imperialism (2000); and The Making of the West: Peoples and Cultures. She is the editor of Global Feminisms since 1945 (2000) and coeditor of Objects of Modernity: Selected Writings of Lucy Maynard Salmon, Gendering Disability (2004) and the forthcoming Oxford Encyclopedia of Women in World History. Smith has received fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, the National Humanities Center, and the American Council of Learned Societies. Currently she is studying the globalization of European culture since the seventeenth century.

Practical but not exhaustive

I see two reviews here, and neither of them have anything to do with the book. It'd be nice if people didn't rate the product based on the shipping.

I've been using "Europe in the Contemporary World" for a history class all semester. As a student, I like to think I'm pretty well read when it comes to European history, especially the history of Eastern Europe. This book was an excellent guide throughout the class, offering insights to political and social climate. Due to necessity, however, it barely scratched the surface of many important events in European history in the last 100 years.

Pros:
The book is extremely well organized. You will have no problem following the evolution of events from the Russian Revolution in 1917 to the reunification of Germany. Timelines at the beginning of each chapter make it easy to get a birds eye view of each time period as it comes along. Documents and photo essays bring history to life with fascinating looks into the lives of real people from the times and places covered. Information on developments in Western nations is exhaustive. The influence of the United States is also well documented.

Cons:
Hardly exhaustive and very Western oriented. If you want to hear European history from a highly Western point of view, this is the book for you. If you've studied Eastern Europe and Russia *ever* this book will frustrate you, as references to both are filled with anti-slavic sentiment. Events and political and social climates in the east are mentioned rarely if at all. The focus here is definitely on the Western nations, and you will hear very little of what happened in Eastern Europe outside of Russia for the last 100 years. The book is often repetitive, going over the same concepts repeatedly from one chapter to the next or even within a single chapter. Anyone with previous experience in European history may be bored. Facts, dates and names are difficult to extract. You will definitely want a history reference as well, such as "Modern European History," if you are using this for a class.

More than just Political and Military History

Summary: Since I’m fascinated with European History, I found this book to be worth five stars. This is a basic text book covering the 20th century including political, military, economic, and social history. At the end of each chapter is a short section on documents and pictures to highlight the important points of each chapter. The book also discusses other areas of the world, such as the U.S., as they impact Europe.

Best: I enjoyed the social and economic history of women. Why after World War II did France shave the heads of 19,600 women and only 400 men for Nazi collaboration (page 398)? Some of the women were paraded naked through the streets. Why were women singled out for public humiliation and not men? Also after the war, why did German stores close early, making it impossible for married working women to shop, while French stores stayed open until late evening (page 449)? Bonnie G. Smith answers these questions in her book.

Worst: The historical analysis was great from World War I to the Cold War, but weak since the Cold War. The last decade was reported, but not analyzed. Some of the documents put me to sleep. Other documents such as the Black African girl, who was born and raised in Berlin, was insightful (page 543). “How did you learn to speak German with a Berlin accent,” people would ask her? Military history was covered in the book, but not in detail. Maps were well done, but pictures were so-so.

Conclusion: Great book for anyone interested in 20th century Europe. I lived through the last few decades, but still found the last chapters interesting and informative. The 20th century in Europe was an era of war which didn’t end until 1990. Now balancing the welfare state, seeking unity through the European Union, and finding economic growth since the loss of foreign colonies is the goal of Europe. EUROPE (including Russia), America, and the “Asian Tigers”, remain the powers and drivers of the world.

One of the most well organized and precise books on 20th century European history I have ever read. I read this front to back for a "History of Modern Europe" course a few years ago. I was lucky enough to have a Russian teacher who came to America in the 90's to get away from the still mostly communist society in Russia, and she had great insight (to go along with the book) on what it was like to grow up in communist USSR. Contrary to another review on here, the "anti-slavic" sentiment of the book reads out more like "anti-communism," but what it does do is give you an honest insight to what a communist society looks, acts, and feels like. it's not a popular message that many "higher-learning" institutions want students to know about, but the book is brutally honest about both positive and negative facets of certain time periods in Europe. Both world wars, the rise of communism, totalitarianism, fascism, naziism, immediate post-war period, recovery, economic recessions, and economic recoveries are well laid out, documented, and easy to understand. The book is fair and balanced; I have read many history and social science books that lay the flattery thick on pro-progressive agendas and attempt to skewer capitalism. I am not making a point necessarily on which one is right, but it is refreshing to read truth and facts as opposed to agenda.

This book gives good and honest assessments of some of the most effective leaders of post-war Europe, including Thatcher, Kohl, and Kruschev, and provides excellent insight not just to the details of what happened, but to the atmosphere that pervaded certain countries at key points in history. Each chapter will divulge economic, historical, and social factors that created national sentiments and moods, which ultimately resulted in the rise of communism, the start of the 1st World War, and the Russian Revolution. All in all, a great asset to anyone's history collection. I kept this book (unlike most of my "garbage-in/garbage-out" textbooks) and still reference it when I need sources.

I am in half way through but can tell you already that this is must have for ad agency. Great choice of 230 campaigns (print ads, product designs, installations). Definitely it is not the shining book to just look at on the bookshelf.

It's a beautiful, beautiful book!!!!!!!!!

What a book! This book is a creative gem. So much creative candy. I did not know what to do with myself. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, the images, and stories from around the world makes it all the more engaging. This is my reference manual and inspiration for those difficult projects that need a bit more creativity harnessing. My creative director stole it for 3 days and hesitantly gave it back. It is the kind of book that you have to see and and read to benefit from it. I would encourage anyone
interested or working in design, marketing, or advertising to purchase it. It's a beautiful, beautiful book!!!!!!!!!

I accidentally found this book at my university library...and I found it to be a great piece of work.

I found the examples of good advertising to be really inspiring.

At the least, it is a beautiful book to gain inspiration from. But at its height, the connections made by the author are really worthwhile.

Excellent, Easy-to-Use Workbook for Organizations Engaged in Strategic Planning Process

When our organization decided to engage in the strategic planning process, I reviewed a myriad of resources, and I believe that this workbook is the best. Not only does it explain the planning process well, but it offers a variety of paths through which to pursue planning, making it useful for any organization at any stage of growth. Plus, the worksheets are a great addition. Overall, the workbook has helped our planning process tremendously.

A blueprint for planning the future

A good workhorse of a book which takes you through the steps of creating a strategic plan for your organization. A little sketchy in some areas but does provide great worksheets to action all the stages. I particularly liked the emphasis on trying to be realistic in your approach and in the resources needed.

Revealing cross-cultural exercise on theodicy

In Fariduddin Attar’s (d. 1221) Musibatname, the tragedy of Satan’s outsized love for God who won’t submit to anybody else than Him (he is regarded by many Sufis as the only true monotheist), may lead to deep compassion in the reader for the fallen angel, irrespective of Satan’s clear misconception. Adam might have been created from mud. But he received the Almighty’s breath of life.

Attar’s work as well as new aspects of Job’s fate have come to my attention a couple of years ago when reading German/Iranian orientalist Navid Kermani’s book about Attar, Job and the metaphysical revolt (Der Schrecken Gottes, C. H. Beck, Munich 2005). Attar, who was most probably killed in the Mongolian Storm of the 13th century in the city of Nishapur in Khorasan, has something in mind which will be described as theodicy in 1710 by German philosopher Gottfried Leibniz, the problem of Evil. Kermani’s brilliant work assembles much of the medieval, enlightenment and contemporary literature on the topic without providing the reader with a final answer (except strengthening views of an agnostic). One impression I got is that in what the West in a misconception calls Middle Ages (in fact, darkness was prevalent but not in the Islamic World which was bright in these long centuries), Jews, Zoroastrians, Christians and Muslims were living in peace in, say, what is now Eastern Iran, knowing each other’s Holy Books, and getting their inspirations for spiritual journeys from both the Qur’an and the Bible.

The knowledge of our common spiritual origins may really matter when it comes to mutual respect and understanding. When comparing the sober verses about Job in the Holy Qur’an and colorful legends most Muslims are able to tell about the fate of this just, whole-hearted and upright man which are nowhere narrated in the Qur’an, we have to assume that the common traditions are still alive.

No Muslim will, of course, believe that the Almighty was betting with Satan on poor Job. There are only four suwar briefly naming Ayyub, Q4:163 and Q6:84 listing him among the other prophets; and Q21:83f and Q38:41ff where his suffering and patience is mentioned. I was long wondering, why. I had my respective revelation when reading Kermani’s book. All stories differ when told by different protagonists. Each of us has a different viewpoint, and conclusions may be to the contrary. Muslims believe that the Qur’an is God’s uncreated Word. About the Author
The youngest in a family of nine children, Julie Gassman grew up in Howard, South Dakota. After college, she traded in small-town life for the world of magazine publishing in New York City. She now lives in southern Minnesota with her husband and their three children.

Sarah Horne was born in sub-zero Derbyshire, UK, one cold November day. Since then, she has graduated from Falmouth College of Arts in 2001, and from Kingston University with a Masters in illustration in 2005. What a great book! This is a saying we use A LOT in the younger grades at my school - "You Get What You Get and You Don't Throw a Fit!" I am REALLY excited someone finally turned this great little saying into a helpful book. It is PERFECTLY written. Best part is Melvin goes home and also teaches his family all about this new rule he learns at school from his teacher. Students are always learning to deal with disappointment throughout their school day. This saying is an easy way to help kids cope and move on from whatever small they think is an injustice. In life we are not always going to get our way and get what we want - lets remind kids to be happy and grateful for what they do get - not what they don't get.

Teaching Children to Handle Disappointment

"Melvin did not deal well with disappointment." This is the beginning of Julie Gassman's newest book, You Get What You Get. It tackles the problem of handling disappointment in a clever and straightforward way. Melvin throws a fit whenever he doesn't get what he wants. Apparently this is tolerated at home and he always gets his way, but at school the rule is "You get what you get if you don't throw a fit." Melvin learns to control his behavior at school pretty quickly and when he spills the beans at home, his parents take on a new philosophy as well. The book makes a great lesson and relevant point about self control that any child can understand. With bright illustrations and a to-the-point message, Gassman has created a winning book with a great message.

Great for Meltdowns

I purchased this book for my daughter in an attempt to help with some of her big tantrums when she is told "no" or if she gets something she doesn't want. We also have I Just Don't Like The Sound of No by Julia Cook and Mouse Was Mad by Linda Urban and those have been a HUGE help in our home.

My daughter is 3 and is prone to epic meltdowns. While her behavior is pretty age appropriate, it's not okay in our home. We are so ready for her to be out of this phase and have been working with her to help her deal with her feelings better. There's no overnight solution but this book is definitely helping us get there little-by-little.

Melvin is a little squirrel who has fits when he doesn't get what he wants, or when things don't go his way. At school he learns the rule, 'You get what you get, and you don't throw a fit'. At school he learns that throwing a fit is not okay, but since his family doesn't know this rule, he continues to have fits at home. Until one day he tells his sister, who is whining, the rule. Then his family agrees that the rule should also be applied at home. Melvin realizes that even though he might want to throw a fit, he should not.

This book is great since it it's not preachy to kids and takes that pressure away from them. I know my daughter has heard us telling her 84357025903 times that it's not okay for her to flip out and scream and flail around, etc. Instead, we see Melvin doing it and we see how silly he looks. We also see things from the family's point of view and we empathize with them having to deal with Melvin's come-aparts.

The only problem is that it does not suggest what kids can do instead of throwing a fit. Obviously they have legit feelings and need to get them out somehow. That's what a fit is, after all. So, after reading we have a talk with my daughter about what Melvin should do from now on instead of having a fit. My daughter likes to suggest that Melvin take some alone time, or yell into a pillow.

This is definitely a light-hearted take on the subject, and is mostly good to simply aid in introducing this rule into the home. I would definitely pair it with other, more serious, books to help kids understand that tantrums are not okay.
