Great History Resource

This book is well researched and contains great information. Mr. Johnson and his wife toured South Dakota after retirement and went to every town/city/village that has ever existed in the state and took photos at each stop and they provide interesting detail about each and every location. Worth the money spent.

Grade 3-4?Danny Bigtree, lonely for the Mohawk reservation he left two months ago and alienated from his fourth-grade classmates in his Brooklyn school, yearns for acceptance. When his father returns to their city apartment from his construction job, Danny opens up about his persecution at school. By sharing the Iroquois legend of Aionwahta (Hiawatha), Richard Bigtree guides his son toward traditional sources of strength and peacemaking. The man visits the classroom where he shares the same tale, eliciting positive responses. Then Danny's schoolyard nemesis throws a basketball right at his face, bloodying his nose and lips, and Danny wonders if this act was intentional. Then his father is injured in a high-steel accident. Peaceful resolution comes on the schoolyard, and reassuring signs from his recuperating dad round out the narrative. Stock characters carry the didactic story. The father "elder" figure becomes one-dimensional: all noble, wise, and patient. This story lacks dialogue and character development and has far too much exposition. There is a heaviness to the teachings. Murky, dark, black-and-white prints have no child appeal. But there is pollution and unemployment on the reservation, and Danny's parents have come to the city to work. Bruchac weaves together the traditional and the realistic as Danny's ironworker father tells stories of his people's history and heroes, stories that give Danny courage to confront his schoolyard enemies and make friends with them. The purposive information and message are lightened by family jokes that mock solemn Hollywood stereotypes ("Help me, my son") and show the loving intimacy between people who can tease each other and laugh together. Dan Andreasen's occasional full-page charcoal illustrations reinforce the sense of a sturdy schoolkid in the playground and at home, in touch with his roots. Hazel Rochman

Eagle on the Peace Tree

Danny, an American Indian, has moved to the city. The kids at his school all ignore him or, the ones who do give him any attention, tease and bully him. One day he asked his father for advice about his schoolmates. His father tells him a story about Aionwahta, the hero/peacemaker between all the tribes. He made everything peaceful and turned an enemy into a brother. He grew a pine tree and put an eagle on top of the pine to make sure the peace will never be destroyed again. Danny wants to be just like Aionwahta. Can he turn his enemy into a brother, or at least a friend? This is a story of courage and overcoming obstacles, with the help of his family. Danny uses his courage to try to fix himself and his surroundings.
I really enjoyed this book because it was written so "smoothly." You felt like you were watching this story go by through a hidden window.

I read the Eagle song and it was o.k. I didn't like it a lot,but it wasn't horrible either. I like the way his dad told him not to worry about what other peoplen think. Becase i get picked on a lot.

Because of the lack of short chapter books with urban contemporary Native American protagonists, all public/school libraries should pick this up - especially for NA kids who have just moved from rural/reservation to the big city. It may work best for a parent and child to read together and discuss.

Drescher's scratchy cartoon drawings add life and a touch of comedy to the story. Harry's expressive face, with its eight eyes and mouth full of teeth, is never scary or terrifying. Informative AND Cute

Through interview format this book presents great insight into the life of tarantula. This book provides children with a delightful journey through some nonfiction; this is something children need more of. With all the nonfiction reading children have to do in upper grades, I try to expose them to as much of it as I can. This book shows children that nonfiction does not have to be dry and boring. I learned a lot about tarantulas through this book; they were creatures I never thought much about before. This text helps to make them seem less "creepy" to children. My students love this book and a few of them like to take the book aside and play the parts of tarantula and interviewer.

VERY inappropriate for my 5 year old to bring this home from school and have me read out loud to him. ' I have to transfer my web sack of sperm to her. i must be very careful and tap her in all the right places. tapping puts her in a romantic mood. then i transfer my sac and im out of there in a flash, so far so good. i can thank my lucky stars"- NOT OK

My daughter (5 yo) and son (2 yo) love this book. She checked it out from the library and I came here to buy her a copy. I was really surprised to find such poor reviews of the book. It seems like many object to teaching your children about reproduction using factual language like sperm. I actually disliked that page because it mentioned romance! Talk about personification. But there is plenty of that in children's books like bugs don't talk either!
Children should learn how the world works. How bugs reproduce is an excellent introduction to the topic. You can use this as an easy introduction to the sperm and the egg.

The story is an interview of Harry the tarantula and gives children a great view of life from the tarantula's perspective. I learned about how tarantulas protect themselves from predators.

Well done and of lasting value...

This anthology takes an in-depth look at a church that is little known to many outside Egypt or the world of Oriental Orthodox Christianity. Its various articles explore the history, theology, and culture of Coptic Orthodoxy, as well as the roles of such key figures as recent popes Kyrillos VI and Shenouda III in the formidable renewal of their church. Others deal with significant themes such as the role of women and nuns within church and society, the changing role of laity, and shepherding the dispersion of Coptic Christianity due to recent emigration. The book as a whole is well researched, clear, and accessible. Since it was written in the 1990s, there is no doubt a need for updating and revision, but this book serves as an excellent introduction and overview. It will continue to provide understanding of Coptic Orthodoxy within its expanding context, and it will extend the efforts of church leaders to build bridges to the rest of ecumenical Christianity.

Great collection of articles on the current Coptic Orthodox Church

This collection of articles and essays on the Coptic Orthodox Church today is a gem. It is full of information and insights into both the practical and the spiritual sides of the Coptic Orthodox Church. I have had great use for and delight in the articles by dr. Samuel Rubenson and Dina el-Khawaga as well as Nora Stene, on topics as diverse as renewal of the Coptic theology, lay participation in the Church, and Coptic children in the Church. I look forward to the rest of the essays when I have enough time to give them, because they truly deserve it.

Thorough, clear, and with a sprinkling of snark make this the best book I've read on "hygge," and I've read LOTS of them. Still looking for someone who can translate the concepts of summer hygge-ing from the cool, crisp woodlands and beaches of Scandinavia to the soggy, humid, bug-infested backyards of America though.

It contemplates how to add coziness and provides details of how the Danes do and have for many years. Candles, companions, and comfort. Essays

I bought this book because I respect the authors work and some of the topics drew my interest.

It's essentially a collection of essays and articles that has been published at various times which becomes clear as the level of academic maturity differs from one article to the next. I only give it three stars because the majority of the essays read like magazine articles (which I think they were). Tyson saves the book by his impeccable research, but looses me when he adds his own opinion as being objective fact.

Check the material that he covers, and decide if the price is worth his research and opinion on those subjects. I doubt somebody would find all the chapters of interest to them.

Interesting Read

I have been a fan of Donald Tyson's work for years. This book, I think would be a great introduction to those unfamiliar with his other work. I enjoyed it very much. I find this author to be perceptive and responsible in his approach to esoteric subjects.
