"The Erotic Equivalent of Shogun" Puts On Its Deerstalker

This direct sequel to Women of the Mountain, Warriors of the Town and, so far at least, last book in the series also focuses on characters other than those of the "quar-ple" formed in the first book: Goemon, whose real name is Konosuke Matsudaira, the governor of Miyako, Rosamund, his shipwrecked English prisoner/mistress, Jiro Miura, the giant half-English masterless samurai or ronin turned teacher of swordsmanship, and his wife Okiku, the ninja. Again, in a presumed attempt to keep things fresh this novel focuses on four new characters:

Sugiyama Tamasaburo the samurai, is cast out of his clan as a dangerous anachronism because his talent for brawling and fencing is no longer an asset to a family that wants no more trouble with the ruling Tokugawa.

Isei the forester, has just finished burying his woman and his last child and finds himself driven by his nightmares to travel to Miyako.

Momoe the weaver's daughter, seduced out of her virginity and abandoned by her lover, spirals down the rigid societal hierarchy, facing fresh degradation at every turn.

Ito Shinichi, retired retainer of an important samurai clan, spends his days happily, uh, reenacting ancient battles, but he has recently stumbled on something he knows had better be reported to the authorities. The question is WHICH authorities, and after considerable thought he decides that telling the local governor might be his least bad option, the least likely to result in his having to end his days with his belly ripped out.

To the increasing frustration of the governor, Miyako is experiencing something of a crime wave. Counterfeit coins are being passed; there have been a series of armed robberies; and there appears to be a gang kidnapping women into sexual slavery. In addition bodies are beginning to pile up. An unidentified craftsman is murdered and dumped in a canal, but robbery is not the motive. A samurai is killed in a duel, which is acceptable, but then his widow is raped, which is not. Finally after sending word he has something to tell the governor and shortly after said governor proceeding cautiously has placed a spy in his household, Ito Shinichi is murdered in a rather spectacular way.

Finally Goemon asks his friends to help him deal with the exploding situation. Jiro is asked to find the rogue samurai, who matches the description of the man who recently attacked the bodyservant of the previous novel's heroine, and dispose of him quietly because arresting a samurai always leads to trouble. Okiku is asked to investigate the gang of kidnappers whose existence was discovered only because they made the partially fatal mistake of attacking her. Rosamund is asked to stay out of it, which she obeys in her usual way... which is to say not at all. Osei-Midori, Satsuki's friend and protege who befriended her during the previous novel, rounds out the squad as the planted spy.

Once again the attempt to provide some variety is to be applauded but the result is only partially successful because of the four new characters whose activities we follow only Isei is very interesting or likable, especially after he "picks up" a nun who determines to instruct him in her sect's arcane knowledge of sex (seriously, what OTHER knowledge would a nun teach in this sort of book?) whether he wants to learn or not! Sugiyama is too arrogant and cruel; Momoe is too whiny and stupid; and Ito is too weak and vacillating and perverted (and when a character in THIS series is "too perverted"...) for the reader to care much for. When this is combined with the effort required to lay out the various plot complications, the result is a novel that drags through the first half but really picks up steam in the second half as Goemon, Jiro, and Okiku begin to unravel the intricate plots, and the iron-willed Rosamund inserts herself into the process with chaotic results. Lots of twists and surprises accompany the wrapping up of all the loose ends, and Namban even manages to further develop the four main characters to a greater extent than in any book since the first, and once again the sex scenes materially advance the plot.

I like very much Akahige Nambam, with his wondefull misture of Japanese classical eroticism, samurai adventure, and humor.
But when I received "The New Concubine" I found that it was a re-edition with another name of a book that i already had.

A free black community of skilled artisans and semi-skilled laborers emerged in Norfolk around 1800. Some free blacks earned the respect of leading white businessmen, and many enjoyed easy access to credit and steady employment. They showed no hesitation in suing recalcitrant debtors -- black or white -- and until 1805 they could count on the cooperation of court officials in helping them to collect. But from then on. free blacks experienced a steady decline in status that continued throughout the antebellum period. Legal restraints were placed on them at the same time that Norfolk's economy stagnated. and white immigrants arriving in the 1830s entered fields once monopolized by blacks. By the 1850s the free black community was sunk in hopelessness and despair.

Free Blacks in Norfolk, Virginia, 1790-1860 discusses the active roles that blacks played in creating their community, contradicting prevalent images of free blacks at the mercy of whites. While previous studies of Virginia's free blacks have focused on Richmond or Petersburg, developments in Norfolk's free black community also merit analysis. Norfolk also offers the advantage of a population large enough to provide a reliable data base yet small enough to preserve the stories of individual lives. Those interested in African-American history, Virginia history, orthe South in general will find this book a valuable new resource.

Second Time Around

Just when you think a topic is not worth pursuing, a little light bulb comes on that pushes one to take the next step. Free Blacks in Norfolk Virginia 1790-1860: The Darker Side of Freedom examines social history with respect to free slaves. Tommy L. Bogger offers a different kind of scholarship, which involves manumission, slaves paying their way to freedom. Bogger continues research on the issue of post-slavery before the Civil War that scholars neglected in the past. As the subtitle states, "The Darker Side of Freedom", is indeed a true fallacy that Bogger emphasizes throughout the book that involves remnants of enslavement and the lack of opportunity that remained prevalent for those who attempted to live and financially prosper in the city of Norfolk. Literally, they lived in the "shadows" from their white neighbors despite the fact that they were skilled and educated workers. Bogger goes through the evolution of change for Blacks in Norfolk from vibrant optimism to a sense of letdown. For the most part, they too experienced the economic woes that occurred in the city and the influx of European immigrants arriving in the United States who wanted to start a new life as well. Ironically, this dilemma eventually led them to flee the North or further to the South to pursue a better life where they could build and actively participate in communities of their own, which would also contribute to American society as a whole.

The concluding chapters presents much insight to the dwindling situation that Blacks experienced during the nineteenth century. Bogger shows how death and disillusionment took a toll amongst Blacks, and to add to their uncompromising situations, the Yellow Fever epidemic in 1855 occurred, which left thousands dead. However, what is so surprising is that less Blacks died from the disease because their access to free vaccinations.

Overall, Free Blacks in Norfolk is well researched and documented. Bogger takes much of his accounts from unbiased court documents, but it would have been more helpful if there were more authentic voices within his narrative.

Having been awarded Harrow School's Coward History Prize he emigrated from the UK to Australia aged 18 to return two years later overland via a dozen countries of the ancient world. An engaging and well researched intricate historical novel.The central theme of the life of Francis Bacon and his role as the most likely writer of works attributed to Shakespeare, is well supported by many sub themes. These include evolution , religion, masonry, faith and science and fascinating detailed conspiracies.Whilst not always scientifically supportable these themes will appeal to all lateral thinkers and their content should be included in mainstream teaching to encourage young people to question established and often indoctrinated thinking.
This book should be snapped up by a major publisher to ensure exposure to a wider audience.
It deserves to be a best seller!

Love the book

Love the book. I had read the electronic sample and then wanted to buy, but to my surprise, the electronic version was no longer available; pulled by the publisher. Too bad as I am sight impaired and it's so much easier for me to read via a tablet. Now I am finished the hard copy with a large magnifier so it's cumbersome plus I can't make notes, look up words, or search the web for things I want to review from the book. Love the read.

Interesting conspiracy theory ala The Da Vinci Code. This one runs from Christ thru the Merovingians (though I question that bloodline, skipping from Christ's love child straight to Merovich hundreds of years later), through the Tudor family and Shakespeare.

Still, a good conspiracy read. Lots of photos and purported documentation.

This is probably good if you have a lot more time or a significant other to help or if your not an athlete working a full time job. As a single guy i found this overwhealming. Hours spent compiling a shopping list still dont have all proportions figured out since this is designed for feeding multiple people. Spent an entire day on vacation tring to grocery shop for just 3 days worth of food. After 9 grocery stores including whole foods trader joes safeway and multiple natural markets i feel its safe to say hazelnut butter doesnt exist unless the author meant hazelnut butter with cacao and suger and other addatives. Really extremely frustraiting day for me. Good thing i was on vacation and on a recovery day. Dont know how i could work and cook and train.

Fantastic book.

I bought this book when I started playing the trumpet 8 months ago and it has helped me immensely. I think it really helped to build my range and endurance early on. Even now I heavily rely on it it for warm-ups and maintaining my embouchure.

The premise of the book is that the upper register can be developed through lower register exercises. This makes the books exercises very accessible for beginners. In the first half it doesn't go above staff G, which should be well within the range of all but the newest players.

I can't recommend this book enough. It's cheap and short, but I easily use it more than any other book.

An Overlooked Little Gem

This book is an overlooked little gem. Many other trumpet exercise books that use the harmonic series, or so called "lip slurs", major on intermediate and advanced exercises. This book is a good place for the beginner and intermediate player to start in their study of such exercises. The author gives direct, clear and cautionary directions on how to proceed. Significant gains in flexibility, accuracy, strength and breath control are to be had with the intelligent use of these exercises in daily practice.
