By Natural Minded Family
Address the root cause vs slapping medication in top of an issue makes so much more sense to me!

At the outset of the book Dr Weil admits that what we know of nutrition is changing and that the information in the book is based on the best available information we have today. I appreciate that comment because some information is already dated (cholesterol causing fats). But it is a really informative read and his website is current so as new information becomes available or thoughts about specific foods change, one can read the latest available information on the website.

I also like that he is a traditionally trained doctor so that holistic remedies highlighted are neither the popular fad of the day nor baseless in fact. When there are no scientific studies, he may indicate 'some people find 'x' works.'

It was recommended that I read this book by a Diet Consultant as I wanted to drop weight, change meds dosages, and cut medicine bills. This book has got it right. I started reading from page 1, and found explanations for all kinds of questions that wasn't even aware that I should have. I am so glad that the Consultant made me aware of Dr. Weil. The road to natural medicine doesn't have to be expensive. I drop 3 lbs at a time usually, and am now through about 3 sizes. I have never been hungry at all through this process, and have learned so much about natural herbal healing. I have recommended this book to so many of my friends who like me reach a point in weight loss, and then can't get around the log in front of them to go forward to accomplish their goal. This book is a very valuable tool.

Very commercial, nothing new in this book
By Robert J. Crosby
I am a big fan of Dr. Weil's earlier books, especially Spontaneous Healing and the Natural Mind. Lately, I have been on an advanced nutrition studies and herbal medicine kick, so I revisited Andrew Weil's writings by reading this book. I found his nutritional advice to be out of step with more current researchers, particularly, Gary Taubes, whom Dr. Weil himself gives credit to in a recent interview. In particular, I think his recommendations toward vegan living are more environmentally/sustainability motivated than proven healthier alternatives to meat. Also, I felt his review of herbal remedies was sort of folksy, and he missed an opportunity to spell out the problems with pharmaceutical antibiotics, and show the solid evidence for using herbal medicines to combat a host of infectious diseases. I would still recommend this book to anyone who wants a refresher course on healthy living, but if you are a scientist, you will be left wanting more substance.

From Publishers Weekly
Though the latest book from Nobel Prize-winning Pamuk (Istanbul, Snow) is a standard late-career essay collection, it makes clear the reasons behind the Turkish author's acclaim. Eschewing flash and flourish, Pamuk's style is plain, simple and persuasive-but therein lies its subtle power, well represented over more than 75 pieces divided into sections like "Living and Worrying" and "Politics, Europe, and Other Problems of Being Oneself." Self-reflection and cultural evolution emerge often as twin themes, as in his consideration of the Thousand and One Nights: "In those days, young Turks like me who considered themselves modern viewed the classics of eastern literature as one might a dark and impenetrable forest." These concerns lead naturally to political considerations, such as his conclusion that "the lies about the war in Iraq and... secret CIA prisons have so damaged the West's credibility in Turkey... it is more and more difficult for people like me to make the case for true western democracy in my part of the world." There's humor as well; in "Giving Up Smoking," a smoking cab driver begs Pamuk's pardon: "He was opening the window. 'No,' I said, 'keep it closed. I've given up smoking.'" Also included are musings on his own books and a short story, "To Look Out the Window." Disarmingly honest, Pamuk refuses to give in to melodrama or stylistic quirks, giving his feeling and frustration crystalline clarity and lasting weight.

From Bookmarks Magazine
The Baltimore Sun describes 2006 Nobel Prize winner Orhan Pamuk’s latest work as "part diary, part travelogue, part confession, part writer’s guide to the galaxy, part political tract, part spiritual journey, part paean to the beauty of language and the configuration of words." Though critics agreed that the pieces were uneven, they were completely divided over which essays were the best. They also differed over Maureen Freely’s translation: some praised her smooth, conversational rendering, while others considered it too loose. Other Colors is not intended as an introduction to Pamuk’s work. Readers who have appreciated his brilliant, powerful fiction will enjoy peeking behind the curtain, but those unfamiliar with his work should start with one of his novels.

Other Colors? Think Rainbow
By Byron
Not a moment or detail of life and living appears to pass Orhan Pamuk by without notice. This collection is breathtaking, both in terms of the wide range of topics he tackles and how easily he transitions between what might otherwise be considered mundane vs. majestic moments. The glue here is that Pamuk brings an incredible eye and humanity to everything he touches, leaving little to get lost in translation. Few writers that I have come across over the years capture the texture and tone of those often simple daily scenes more sparingly, vividly and memorably. Fewer still write as though literally every single word on every page matters. Here, they do, in the hands of someone who clearly loves everything about putting pen to paper. You can't help but read a book like this and savor the experience. What a joy--I finished it only a few days ago and I'm already looking forward to re-reading.

Orhan Pamuk deserved the Nobel Prize
By La BugZ
An outstanding book, one I parceled off in reading for as long as i could because it is such a fine piece of writing. The Nobel Address was particulary moving but for that matter, the entire book was. I look forward to the next publication of Mr. Pamuk's and only regret I could not hear and seem him at Stanford University a few days ago.

The Age of Catastrophe: A History of the West 1914–1945, by Heinrich August Winkler

One of Germany’s leading historians presents an ambitious and masterful account of the years encompassing the two world wars

Characterized by global war, political revolution and national crises, the period between 1914 and 1945 was one of the most horrifying eras in the history of the West. A noted scholar of modern German history, Heinrich August Winkler examines how and why Germany so radically broke with the normative project of the West and unleashed devastation across the world.

In this total history of the thirty years between the start of World War One and the dropping of atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Winkler blends historical narrative with political analysis and encompasses military strategy, national identity, class conflict, economic development and cultural change. The book includes astutely observed chapters on the United States, Japan, Russia, Britain, and the other European powers, and Winkler’s distinctly European perspective offers insights beyond the accounts written by his British and American counterparts. As Germany takes its place at the helm of a unified Europe, Winkler’s fascinating account will be widely read and debated for years to come.

To compare Kershaw to Winkler is like comparing an apple to an orange
By Gabriel Sassoon
To compare Kershaw to Winkler is like comparing an apple to an orange. Kershaw is a magnificent writer who seeks to look for trends and patterns, focusing on the whole forest in order to see its contours. Winkler, on the other hand, delves into the forest, checking out each tree, and only then positing his analysis and interpretations. Details are important! I have read many books on this period, and this is by far one the best I have read. It is a detailed, intelligent, thought-provoking look at the ALL the factors- and not just some- that lead to the age of catastrophe. I feel lucky in finally having an English version of this book. I have waited a long time and hope his other works will also be translated.
This is as good as it gets.

A work by a German historian who knows who was right in World War II
By Schmerguls
This book by a prolific German historian who was born in 1938 was published in German in 2011 and in English in 2015. It is a very detailed account of of events during the years named--becoming more detailed as we approach World War II. I found it admirable since it does not make any excuse for Hitler or for those who were responsible for his attaining power. And while Stalin's crimes are recognized the author, unlike some Germans,,in no way seeks to excuse Hitler or to suggest that it was not providential that Hitler was destroyed by the cooperation of the good guys of the West combining with Communist Russia. The book is the second volume of a four volume history starting with the dawn of German history and going up to the present, but as far as I know this volume is the only one of the four translated into English. Some of the account of American history shows a lack of familiarity with American politics but I don't think it is seriously misleading. It took me 11 days to read this work but I felt it was time well spent..

A lumbering account of the what happened in Europe for about thirty bad years of the last century.

While the writer, a German historian, starts slowly and often bogs the reader down in the minutia of better forgotten election counts in obscure countries of the Balkans, his book does gather steam and many interesting arguments and observations are made. Why did the Great War's political ending spawn so many problems? What was Italian fascism? Why did Germany allow Hitler to come to power? What became of the Jews and why? What part in this horrible time was played by the USSR? What was the political aftermath of World War II in terms of Europe's colonial system?

As with any book of this scope an sweep, there are plenty of objections to be made. For example, I find it hard to believe that Pierre Laval was "one the finest political minds France has ever known." (p. 586) Or, that "there was no enthusiasm [by the public] for war in Germany in September 1939." (p.669) Or, that Stafford Cripps had any real shot for the leadership of England in 1942.(p. 746)

Dr. Winkler is weak on United States political issues. One example: When discussing the rejection of the Morgenthau Plan (p. 860), the author claims that if the U.S. leaders had stuck to this harsh economic plan for post-war Germany it would have led to chaos in Germany and for the American people "to rise up against their leaders." I doubt it.

Setting aside my many specific reservations, this is all-in-all, a good thought provoking history--from a modern German perspective--for those deeply interested in the politics and wars of the early- to mid-twentieth century.

Great Book - Helped Crohn's Disease
By J. Mode
Praise God for Dr. Fuhrman's work and his texts on nutrition and health! Having been diagnosed with Crohn's disease for nearly 6 years and taking the medication the doctors told me to, was still having occasional problems and left wondering if this was how I was going to have to live for the rest of my life. I had read in the Bible that fasting is a valuable spiritual discipline and can be used to draw one closer to God by finding in Him a source of spiritual nutrition and strength available nowhere else. (Not to mention that Jesus gave His disciples instructions on how to fast when they did - expecting them to after His departure.) I had even experienced this. However, after being told by my doctor and others how important it was to keep my weight at a healthy level I decided that fasting my not be a good idea, since I didn't want to get even thinner. Well, I should have had greater faith :(

It was remarkable what even a short 1 day (and later 2 day) fast did for my digestive health. The rest from digestion improved how I felt very quickly and the improvement lasted. I have also read Eat for Health and implemented many of those concepts into my life and God has blessed me substantially. I am no longer taking medication at all - no asthma medicine (taken since I was 10 years old), and no Crohn's medication!

Definitely recommend this book.

GREAT BOOK
By Victoria
I wish Dr. Fuhrman work was a prerequisite for middle and high school, college students. What if this book and all of his other books were Regents classes that you actually had to pass, what would be available to our children. Most importantly, what future could we all live into that would make a difference for every aspect of the planet. What if when we went to the doctor, the first question they asked is what have you been eating, when is the last time you fasted, or do a 30-day colon cleanse in addition only eat raw vegetables during this time, how much medication would anyone be taking, how many aches and pains would people complain about, and how much more peace we can have in accepting our differences

Outdated advice confirmed by Dr. Fuhrman's office
By js
I believe Eat to Live taught me more about nutrition than any other book besides How Not to Die by Greger. So I thought, ok, fasting might be the next step, and bought this book. I wrote to Dr. Fuhrman's office to ask a few questions that came up for me. This was the response I got:

"While Dr. Fuhrman says that fasting may be beneficial for certain medical conditions such as autoimmune diseases, since he wrote Fasting and Eating for Health in 1995, there have been research advancements in the field of nutritional science pointing to the healing effects of a plant-based, nutrient-rich eating style. After careful review of thousands of nutritional research studies, Dr. Fuhrman teaches that commitment to his nutritarian eating program will provide the same health benefits of fasting. The difference is that fasting provides only short-term results, while commitment to eating nutrient-rich, plant-based foods gives long-term results. Consult your local physician before beginning any fast."

Then why is this book still for sale with no commentary in the foreword or introduction, an update that says, hey, this is old information? It would still be interesting, but then you would know that it's purpose was more to understand Fuhrman's approach in the 90s.

The short of it: the book is interesting, but you're going to get outdated info.

From Publishers Weekly
Founder of Domino's, the world's largest pizza company, and owner of the Detroit Tigers, Monaghan here joins the tycoons who have ventured into autobiography. His company, having grown in 25 years from a modest pizza restaurant into an international chain of 2600 stores during the franchising boom of the '60s and '70s, now has $1.1 billion in annual sales. Stressing that spiritual values derived from his Catholic seminary days take precedence over other considerations, Monaghan dismisses such worldly pleasures as private jets, yachts and tropical islands as "just frosting." From this pedestrian account of his climb up the ladder of success, it appears that except for his baseball team and an interest in Frank Lloyd Wright's architecture, Monaghan is totally dedicated to every aspect of the pizza business. He attributes the leading position of Domino's Pizza in the fast-food industry to his philosophy of defensive managementof concentrating on the business one already has. Photos not seen by PW. great book
By cradlecatholic
Tom Monaghan is my son's hero and we wanted to know more about him. This is a great book for entrepreneurs to read and get a realistic view of how things are when you are struggling to build a business. Tom has a passion for making the best pizza and put this talent to work, by the grace of God, to build a successful business. More than that, Tom has become a Catholic hero for many young (and older) Catholics who want to learn to live their faith in the world, but not of the world! This book is a great intro to the life and thinking of Tom Monaghan.

Column I wrote on Huffington Post to update my 2002 post
By Kindle Customer
This is a column that I wrote on Huffington Post, August 22 2011 to update my 2002 post. It is part of a chapter in my book, Wealth Without Wall Street, A Main Street Guide to Making Money. As I note, this book was a road map and inspiration for me.

Don McNay
[...]

George Bernard Shaw said there are two tragedies in life: One is not to get your heart's desire. The other is to get it.

I learned during my first few years in business exactly what Shaw was talking about.

I hit it big at an early age. I started my business at 23, and by 29 I was one of the top producers nationally of mutual funds, annuity, and bond sales for the New York broker with whom I was affiliated.

I had achieved the highest levels in the Million Dollar Round Table. I had a huge house in an upscale, gated neighborhood, a red Mercedes Benz convertible, and a big, penthouse-style office on the top floor of one of Lexington's taller towers. I was featured in Forbes and Financial Planning.

One year later both my lawyer and accountant recommended that I file for bankruptcy. My net worth had plummeted far into the red, and banks were breathing down my neck. My business was still going strong, but I had gotten into a real estate deal that I didn't truly understand with people I didn't know well. And, it happened at a time when the real estate market suddenly turned south.

Initially, I had grown my business by reinvesting profits and being frugal. I had lived modestly and had no debt. I knew my business backward and forward and spent a ton of money educating myself and my staff.

Suddenly, my cash was drained by a sideline investment and the expensive lifestyle I had decided to adopt. I didn't have the money to properly reinvest in my business and in continuing education. My focus went from a long-term view to just getting through the day.

I made the classic mistake of a successful entrepreneur. I thought my first success meant that I would be successful at everything. I got away from the things that had gotten me to the top.

If you study the history of entrepreneurs, you'll see that many do what I did. Their initial idea works. They become successful but then get distracted with outside interests and start to lose the single-mindedness that made them a success. Some recognize their mistakes and regain their focus. Others do not and their businesses fail.

I was lucky. I was able to see what I did wrong and make corrections.

The year was painful, but I learned lessons I will never forget. The experience was as valuable as a Harvard MBA, and I paid more than the school's tuition to achieve it.

In order to get back on track, I had to go back to my roots like Rocky did in the movie Rocky III. I had to regain the "eye of the tiger."

I thought long and hard about what I needed, what I wanted, and the mistakes I had made. I sat near the lighted, uphill waterfall in my massive house, looked at my beautiful car, and realized the house and car weren't important. The only creature comforts I needed were an ice maker, cable television (this was pre-Internet), a recliner, and air-conditioning.

What I really valued was financial independence and the challenge to be the best at what I did. I couldn't be independent if banks, creditors, and a fancy lifestyle controlled my life. A line in Bill Hybels' book, Christians in the Marketplace: Making Your Faith Work on the Job, hit me. It essentially said "if you spend all your time making money to support a material possession like a car, the car has replaced God in your life." Or as the band Zoe Speaks said several years after Hybels, "If money's our God, I want a new religion."

My religion had become keeping up my lifestyle and managing debt. Once I realized what I really valued -- financial independence -- it was easy to implement a different plan.

I ditched the big house and traded in the Mercedes for a Buick. I relocated my panoramic office to a small one on a ground floor. I sold most of the furniture in my home, except for the bed and recliner, and moved to a modest apartment that had air-conditioning, an ice maker, and cable.

I read and reread Pizza Tiger, the biography of Tom Monaghan, the founder of Domino's Pizza.

Monaghan's career path had the same sudden boom and sudden bust before he finally broke through to an international level. I couldn't afford to buy the book so I kept checking it out of the public library. (I own two copies of it now.) Monaghan's story gave me hope and inspiration.

I eventually knocked out my debt as I reinvested in my business and education. I got a second master's degree in financial services and my fourth professional designation.

Going back to the original formula got me on a growth path again. Four years after I ignored the advice to file bankruptcy, I was out of debt and my business was bigger than ever.

"Stick to what you know" seems like common-sense advice, but I have watched many business people make the same mistake I did. Once things start to go well, entrepreneurs think success will last forever. They often get into ventures outside of their expertise and start spending too much money and time on a fancy lifestyle.

When they crash, they do one of two things. They give up and quit or they "double down," to use a gambling term, and focus harder on the original business. Like Monaghan did with Domino's Pizza. After he doubled down, his company reached success beyond his wildest dreams. He made millions, enough for him to buy the Detroit Tigers baseball team.

As I made my comeback, I used to play an obscure Jim Croce song, Age, every single day. Two lines were my mantra. "And now I'm in my second circle and I'm headed for the top, I've learned a lot of things along the way. I'll be careful while I'm climbing because it hurts a lot to drop."

Some of the lessons I teach throughout my new book, Wealth Without Wall Street: A Main Street Guide to Making Money, such as moving your money to a local bank and not having a boatload of debt, were learned through hard and painful experiences. Experiences I want others to avoid.

When people hit it big, they need to stick to what they know, live below their means, avoid credit cards and loans, and put some money away for a rainy day.

Otherwise the first act can be a final act.

Don McNay, CLU, ChFC, MSFS, CSSC of Richmond Kentucky is an award-winning financial columnist. He is the author of the book, Wealth Without Wall Street: A Main Street Guide to Making Money, which is currently available on the Kindle. The hardback copy will be released on September 20.

McNay founded McNay Settlement Group, a structured settlement and financial consulting firm, in 1983, and Kentucky Guardianship Administrators LLC in 2000.

McNay has Master's Degrees from Vanderbilt and the American College and is in the Hall of Distinguished Alumni of Eastern Kentucky University. McNay is a Quarter Century member of the Million Dollar Round Table and has four professional designations in the financial services.

What I wrote in 2002

I checked this book out of the public library at a time when my business was near failure. It gave me the spirit to keep on and have a sucessful turnaround. Monahan is a hell of a great story and it comes from the heart. An orphan, high school dropout who overcomes everything and becomes a billionaire. Only in America.

Not great literature and hard to find but well worth having. Now that I own my own copy, I will never give it up.

Pizza Tiger is a great motivating tool for anyone wanting to run their own business.

Refreshingly honest about his mistakes, I learned a lot from them.
By Maverick
What I loved about this book was just how honest he was about his short comings in business. I've learned a lot just reading about how he made many many mistakes, he grew too quickly while losing sight of who his customer is, and would delegate fully trusting his staff, but never verifying they were doing the right job. So many lessons, and its an easy read, I read it in a week. I wanted to read it because it was suggested by a business coach I trust, and as someone who's got a business with multiple locations, it has opened my eyes to several good things as well that Tom did right, not just negative.

Twelve American Wars: Nine of Them Avoidable, by Eugene G. Windchy

The Hidden History of American Wars Eugene G. Windchy lays bare the tricks, errors, and secret plans that have taken the American people into avoidable wars. Who was to blame for World War I? The Germans, who attacked first? The Russians, who secretly mobilized their army? President Wilson said Britain could have prevented the war but failed to do so. H. G. Wells, who knew the British Foreign Secretary personally, said the failure was deliberate. Southern members of Congress were planning the Civil War five years before it began. President Buchanan’s War Secretary, a secessionist, armed the seceding states. The American consul in California could have acquired that territory peacefully but for the Mexican War. Civilians in Washington orchestrated the Tonkin Gulf incidents that led the United States into the Vietnam War. An Army-recommended strategy could have won the war, but President Johnson rejected it.

Mr. Windchy made quite an effort to locate me ...
By Dale R. Evans
Mr. Windchy made quite an effort to locate me when he was researching his book on Tonkin Gulf. When he succeeded he arranged for us to meet for dinner at a Japanese restaurant. Later in the evening when he excused himself to go to the restroom a Japanese lady came to our table. She said she was the owner of the restaurant and wanted to tell me my friend (Eugene) was so accomplished in the Japanese language he could he carry on a two-level conversation in Japanese as if it was his native language. She said she had never seen any other non-Japanese person with that capability. The point was important because it identified Mr. Windchy's character. When he committed to a project such as: "Twelve American Wars: Nine of Them Avoidable," his research was meticulous and complete. His intent was not an exhaustive history of each war. Others have done that. He focused on the events, decisions, communication, and/or failure of communication that led to war. He avoided dramatic language, and where two or more sources disagreed he presented the view of each in a manner that allowed the reader to reach their own conclusion. The presentation on each war ended with; "Lessons to be Learned." In so doing he shifted the focus from the customary political and moral arguments to a very practical process that should appeal to anyone and everyone interested in U.S. foreign policy. I will go further then that and say it should be required reading for high level military personnel, government employees, politicians, and others who seek to influence decisions war.

Unique approach to the people, policies and events leading the USA into twelve wars. A military history gem.
By Leroy Baseman
This is a must read for anyone interested in the wars America has fought. Mr. Windchy has followed up his widely proclaimed book on the Tonkin gulf incident with this extensively researched and easy to read accounting of the people behind the policies and actions that led us into twelve wars, nine of which he brilliantly reveals we should not have fought. I know of no other book published that addresses this topic with such abundant and relative detail. This is a military history gem, not about trenches and guns, but about intrigue most have never heard of or suspected. This is should be included in every political science and American history course in American universities and military service academies. Without any doubt, he has earned five stars.

Highly recommend.
By Patricia P. Givens
Eugene Windchy is to be commended for researching and analyzing the conditions leading up to twelve wars in which the United States has been involved. There have been innumerable books describing these wars, phase by phase. In most cases, we cannot learn from how the wars were fought. This book, perhaps, can give us food for thought on how to avoid war, save lives, and encourage peace in this world.
This book is recommended reading for our present-day politicians in Washington. I, as a concerned American, will recommend it to my friends, family, and associates.
