What do we study in international relations? How do we study it? And how do we apply it?

Using these guiding questions as a framework, International Relations shows students how to think critically about issues in world politics. In each chapter, a brief opening case is followed by a description of key developments, an explanation of the main approaches to analyze them, and applications of those approaches in individual, state, and global contexts. The authors provide extensive historical information throughout, giving students a holistic frame of reference from which to understand current events.

FEATURES:

* A consistent analytical framework organized around three questions encourages critical thinking

* Three full chapters on key approaches--realism (Ch. 2), liberalism (Ch. 3), and constructivist and other modern perspectives (Ch. 4)--along with coverage of relevant theories and levels of analysis in each chapter introduce students to a broad spectrum of approaches

* Two chapters give unique emphasis to cultural and identity factors (Ch. 8) and predictions for the future (Ch. 12)

* "Visual Review" summaries enable students to visualize how all the material fits together

* Concluding "Past, Present, and Future" sections apply each chapter's material to both classic and contemporary challenges

* "Debate" boxes focus on controversial questions and issues and ask students to consider their own views

* "Case in Point" features provide in-depth examinations of current or historical events and include critical-thinking questions that ask students to think about these events, using the approaches they have learned

Review

"The framework of International Relations is very direct. Students will surely appreciate this easily grasped approach. Shiraev and Zubok impressively take students through a tour of the grand problems that preoccupy heads of state and government and inspire students to think through their own solutions."--Ross E. Burkhart, Boise State University

"Clearly written, timely, and informed by debates among scholars while relevant and engaging for the average student. Its comparative advantage is an approachable integration of theoretical debates with engaging applications of concepts."--David Goldberg, College of DuPage

"I applaud the authors' focus on critical thinking, structured discussion, attention to historical information, cultural and identity factors, and pedagogical devices."--Binnur Ozkececi-Taner, Hamline University

Excellent resource
By Edward
Shiraev and Zuboks' International Relations is a fantastic resource. I could envision it being used at both the undergraduate and graudate levels. It is well written and has a sound layout that makes it very easy to both teach from and to study. Moreover, I would argue that the book is "entertaining" to read in that it has plenty of illustrative examples which bring the text to life. Students would readily see the applications of what they are learning outside of the confines of the classroom. Another attribute that I liked about this textbook is the great combination between historic and contemporary examples. This makes comparing and contrasting situations, over the centuries, much more easy. In all, I would give this book my absolutely strongest recommendation.

INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS By Eric Shiraev and Vladislov Zubok

Many people today are not well educated regarding how their government interacts with other governments and the world. This text is an excellent resource for breaking down the topic into subtopics as the numerous historical examples provide a pillar for the numerous categories. These classifications include, amongst others, the international political economy; international law; sovereignty; foreign policy; Intergovernmental Organizations (IGOs), and Nongovernmental Organizations (NGOs); and global issues, which include conflict and violence between nations, as well as between ethnic peoples. The act of critical thinking, which is defined as the strategy for examining, evaluating, and understanding international relations by reasoning and valid experience, is additionally stressed throughout the book as a new teaching emphasis for the book.

Additionally, the textbook highlights a well-arranged and attractive format which includes important definitions in the margin; highlights a “Chapter Learning” objective section; and in the text a “Check your Knowledge” and a “Debate” sections spread recurrently throughout the chapter. The bright color pictures and illustrations aid in stimulating attentiveness to the subject, while “A Case in Point” stresses specific discussions and promotes critical thinking skills. Tables and charts appear throughout the text for back up. The three categories a student looks for in every chapter are “What Do We Study,” “How Do We Apply It?” which leads to the student into the “Critical Thinking” process that the book emphasizes. Furthermore, this textbook serves as great tool for collegiate classes as well as a superb resource for further research on the many subtopics on both the undergraduate and graduate collegiate levels. If I were to teach this subject, I would be sure to use this book!!

International Relations, Brief Edition, is in some ways even better than the full edition!!
By Susan K. Ugoji
This textbook is written in a peaceful, yet progressive tone that encourages the reader to "build a more prosperous and stable work" (p. 13). There is also much advice about how to study and how the authors view the subject. Additionally, although the book is addressed to "the new generaltion of sudents who have unprecedented access to global information yet lack the background to fully understand it," this version eliminates some of the long-windedness of most full version textbooks and presents a more pictorial view of the sjubect with many new aids for teachers that the full version does not provide. Terminology used is excellent and many examples of the large and small countires, i.e., China, Germany, England, Russia, the United States, as well as Finland, Morocco, Libya, Sweden, etc., are used in the text. The extra work put into this version is in some ways even better than the larger version.
