Rusty Brown, another character by Ware, is a character that I like better than Jimmy Corrigan.

This collection pulls together a lot of content that should not be read in a marathon, but rather enjoyed slowly to savor the details. Nothing in this book is expendable.

Best comic no one is reading

Sure it's cliche but it's probably true. Though chances are with all the media attention it's garnerned, widespread acclaim is soon to come (if it hasn't already). Years ago I heard of Chris Ware's Acme Novelty Library and its wacky size formats and peripherally of the "Smartest Kid on Earth" story that was taking place sporadically within it. Now with the entire story available is a very nicely designed hardcover (and a meaty four hundred pages!) it's quite clear to see that Ware has crafted a masterpiece of the genre. The story alternates in tone between bitter depression and dark humor as it tells the story of Jimmy Corrigan, a lonely shell of a man who's father suddenly appears out of nowhere years after abandoning him to meet him and try to get to know him better. Interspersed with the main story are flashbacks to earlier Corrigan generations, showing that the father issues aren't a new thing with this crew. The plot is simple, but leaves plenty of room for touching scenes and absolutely poetic sequences are Ware explores the multitude of emotions that come with basically meeting your father for the first time. If anything the plot is underrated but that's only because the drawings are so spectacular. Drawing in an exacting style that somehow maintains a pristine kind of beauty, Ware uses all kinds of strange layouts and tiny panels to tell the story, and just when you least expect it blowing the panels out to full page size with enough detail to make your eyes bleed (the scenes alone at the World's Fair are worth the price of the book). By turns thought provoking and depressing, uplifting and hilarious, Ware's book is simply one the most amazing books to come out of the comic medium in a long time and a welcome relief to those who were wondering if all the medium can produce are superheroes. Highly recommended.

Works on So Many Levels...

This is a labor of love. Chris Ware has taken time and his considerable talent and crafted a tale that should be pondered and studied. It is not easy reading, parts are heavy, edgy, sometimes crass, but all of this speaks to and supports the narrative and is not included for shock value, but rather to make the reader THINK.
Few people can boil down life, the injustices and the hurts and the monotonous solitude that all of us find ourselves victim to now and again to this polished effect. Chris Ware succeeds brilliantly. You will relate. Jimmy Corrigan is presented and treated in a way that never insults your intelligence, is never trite and is oft surprising.
As if that weren't enough, Ware's delightful sense of design, his colors and line and sense of place, are all reproduced exquisitely. High-quality paper and highly-saturated inks.
No, I do not know the guy. I don't work for the publisher. I am some random shmo. Rarely is something worth this level of praise. But when it is, credit is due. This is a piece of work that will be discussed many many years hence, on many many levels....

Johnson's new translation of On the Nature of Things is a genuine pleasure to read. The philosophy - "Nothing is ever brought forth by the gods from nothing" - is clear and accessible. The poetry "What evil longing for life is so strong / that it forces us with such compulsion / to remain confused, in doubt and danger?" - is sparkling. About the Author
Ian Johnston was born in Valaparaiso, Chile, and educated in Canada and England. He has a BSc from McGill in Geology and Chemistry, a BA from Bristol in English and Greek, and an MA from Toronto in English. For many years he taught as a college and university-college instructor in British Columbia teaching English, Classics and Liberal Studies. He is the author of The Ironies of War: An Introduction to Homer's Iliad. His translation of Homer's Iliad and Odyssey have recently been published in both book and audiobook form. He is now retired and living in Nanaimo, British Columbia.

On the Nature of Things by Lucretius

This is superb modern translation of this work. If you attempt to read the version which appears in the Great Book of the Western World, you will truly appreciate this translation. Lucretius was an atomist, i.,e., he theorized that all things were made from tiny particles separated by great spaces, a fact which was not proven until the 20th century some 2,000 plus years later. If you like philosophy in particular, you will love reading Lucretius. BTW "The Swerve" is the history of the discovery of Lucretius manuscript.

A must read

In this era the tendency is to believe 2100 years ago poetry and philosophy of life were crude and filled with ignorance. Wrong. The insight Lucretius brings to humanity in this poetic form is powerful and insightful as one reflects upon time and place. Lucretius not only sees with his eyes but listens with his eyes to nature, humanity, and how those forces converge upon each other. As one not educated in poetry it took time to get the rhythm of the poetry and to learn and understand language and usage. That is part of the learning processing and look across this vast vista of time to see that maybe Lucretius invented the idea for Lego's and plus more.

I appreciated the translators footnotes in the ebook format.

Brilliant and Eternally Relevant

A brilliant work - in fact a revelation - that was centuries ahead of its time! By intuitive observation of nature Lucretius was able to deduce the existence of atoms that, in varying combinations, comprise all matter. In doing so he urged his fellow man to relish the empirical nature of things rather than fearing non-existent Gods who, in the vacuum of real knowledge, dominated human emotions. As relevant today as it was in its time, with a poetic touch that keeps the reader as enchanted as well as illuminated.

Precious little book!

I really. Like this book a lot. It discusses both basic knowledge and information you need to know to arrive at the right Riis Josie and treatment. It makes things really easy to find especially when you're in a hurry. Any student of ophthalmology should have this book in their library.

The Vision of God in Jesus Christ

This book is a spiritual gold mine for all people seeking to see God in Jesus Christ as well as those from any and every background who seek the Truth.

St Bonaventure (1217 - 1274) is a doctor of the Catholic Church, lover of Christ, mystic and near contemporary of his spiritual father, St Francis of Assisi.

The book's first work, "The Soul's Journey into God", is an account of how to encounter God through creation, the soul, and reflecting on God's attributes of Perfect Being and Perfect Goodness. These encounters are treated in 6 steps leading us to the 7th and final step of the soul's spiritual rapture into the Holy Trinity.

Bonaventure cries out to us to leave behind all thoughts and desires and abandon our lives to Christ. Progressing through love, prayer and gazing on God we will see and know The Persons of the Holy Trinity, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, in this life and in the life to come.

The second work, "The Tree of Life", is a spiritual account of the central events of Jesus' Life: His Hidden Life, Ministry, Passion, Death, Resurrection, Ascencion and Glorification. It is a profoundly beautiful and poetic work. Bonaventure calls us to be crucified in Christ and to live anew in Him through sharing in His Virtues.

The final work, "The Life of St Francis", is a spiritual biography of the little poor man of Christ. St Francis encounters us and bids us leave all to follow and love Christ. Bonaventure shows us that we must, like St Francis, die in Christ and reproduce His Virtues in our own lives. It is a dynamic and powerful work.

This book will appeal to all people especially those pursuing the vision of God in Jesus Christ. It is a spiritual treasure for all. For Catholics, Bonaventure will provide great wisdom from the depths of the Church's Tradition regarding the soul's mystical marriage to Jesus Christ. A fascinating and enlightening guide to God.

This book comprises much of the great Saints works, and gives readers a glimpse at the different topics the Saint dealt with. I found the Tree Of Life section very deep and mystical, and explains how to have an intimate prayer relationship to God. Excellent overall book.

About the Author
Robert Schulzinger is professor of history at the University of Colorado, Boulder. He received his Ph.D from Yale University in 1971. His areas of expertise are American diplomatic and recent U.S. history. Jeff Phillips is the creator of the website www.smoking-meat.com. Born in North Carolina and raised on southern cooking, Jeff started practicing the art of smoking while still a teenager. He lives in Sapulpa, Oklahoma.

Just a few years after I was married, I was given a small Brinkmann smoker-the one that looks like R2-D2-and I set out to learn how to use it. I was determined to make the most of that smoker no matter how many folks told me that it was cheap and hard to use. This sparked in me a love for the taste of smoked meats and a passion for the tools and techniques you need to produce them . . . This books should be included with all new smokers that people buy

Solid book on the fundamentals of smoking. If you are new to smoking and just picked up a smoker at Home Depot on a whim I highly recommend this book. A co-worker friend of mine bought an electric smoker on Black Friday and I gave him this book for Christmas. The first half talks about the process of smoking, the woods, methods, different kinds of smokers etc. The 2nd half is recipes. The book is worth the purchase for the information in the first half. Most of the recipes are available on Jeff's website.

Speaking of Jeff's website. It is my go to site whenever i am trying something new in my smoker. His knowledge and techniques are so easy to follow that just about anyone can produce a good smoked meal after reading.

One word of caution, the rub and sauce recipes he mentions so frequently on his site are not included in the book even though the book does contain some sauce and rub recipes. Book is still worth the purchase.

Best book I've seen about the basics of smoking meats ...

Best book I've seen about the basics of smoking meats - Jeff breaks down everything you need to know about the different types of woods and smokers to use, plus methods for getting best results with each type of meat.
Last summer I bought my first smoker (a basic Brinkmann Charcoal Smoker) and had some trouble getting the hang of how to use it and was overwhelmed by the number of recipes and other information you can find online. Tried a bunch of different things and was getting a little better each time but it was a slow process and I messed up a few different meals because I didn't really know what I was doing. Nothing I found online came close to what I learned from this book.
After reading through it, I went from a beginner to an experienced smoker almost overnight. Friends, family and neighbors all tell me that my ribs, pulled pork and brisket are as good or better than any restaurant they've been to. Not trying to brag...but I agree. Wouldn't be right to try and take any of the credit for myself though - it all goes to Jeff.
I love the recipes. I follow the directions and haven't been disappointed yet. 3-2-1 Ribs are by far my favorite. Last thing: Be sure to sign up for the emails - he sends out awesome recipes all the time that are a lot of fun to try out.

A must-have for real BBQ

I have looked at and purchased several books on this topic, and this one is the best. It is concise, gives you a bunch of recipes and guidelines along with a wealth of information and tips on "smokeology". I have followed the recipes several times and have not been disappointed yet. I think this book is a must-have for anyone who is smoking meat in whatever kind of smoker you have. You must also check his website as it is a great daily reference for smokers, smoking meats, and tools that you can use to help the finished product!
