Can Someone Be Blamed?

Irwin says that evil is real. After finishing this play, where a family moves from one death through to another, while hearts and spirits are broken or manipulated, the presence of evil does lurk. There is an element of greed which permeates The Secret Rapture, which may be simplified as the downward spiral of one woman, whose spirit and heart are piece by piece removed by her closed people.

I liked this because Hare writes women characters wondefully, and the heroine, named Isobel is a sesnitive soul inundated by the mood of the day. Almost helplessly she sees her world up-turned, not sure if it is meant to be or she's simply passive and afraid.

Hare also creates in the characters of Marion, Isobel's sister, and Tom, Marion's husband, two genuinely deceptive or deceived people. Marion is scary, and Tom is somewhat limp, loving Jesus throughout much of the play. They represent the powerful and power hungry and the righteous, respectively. There are several scenes when I wanted Isobel to lash out furiously at Marion, who arrogantly advances through the world, unmoved by those troubled by it.

This is a heavy play. One that sets damage at the forefront and features people who break and are unbreakable.

David Hare is an amazing writer and this play is one of his best!A captivating storyline that touched emotions that I never knew I had and left me pondering on life and how vunerable we all are!When a play leaves an impression on you,whether good or bad(and in this instance good) you can be sure that the writer is damn good at their job and David Hare sure is!

Building upon the theme that "good people bring out the worst in us," Hare presents a passionate work that never breaks down into melodrama yet wrenches the heart and forces readers and viewers alike to rethink ideas of faith in goodness and in all religions, spiritual and material. Intense and brilliant.

The Call that could Kill

Call Waiting The most intriguing yet creepy book I've ever read is Call waiting. From the moment I picked it up I knew it was going to be scary by the blood on the phone receiver on the cover of the book. I opened it and read the first line which said, "The frightening phone calls began less than an hour after Karen," a teenager who was skinny, had dark hair, and dark eyes, "had the fight with Ethan," her boyfriend. At that time I knew it was going to be scary. As I read on it stated the tone of the book. "One week before the fight, on a snowy, bone-chilling, Saturday night, Karen Masters pulled her blue Corolla onto Jefferson, Ethan's street. The tires crunched over the salted pavement as Karen eased on the curb and cut the headlights." It immediately sent chills down my spine. I think the scariest part of the book was when Karen actually got the real phone calls. "Leave me alone! Do your hear me?" Karen cried angrily. " But I'm inside your brain Karen," the frightening voice rasped. " I can't leave you alone. I'm going to kill you. Maybe tonight." I was shocked at the next part when it said, "Karen started to cry out again-but she muffled herself when she heard the sound. A sound behind the rasping voice. One sound. Karen listened to the sound. Heard it again clearly. And knew who the caller was." Trust me the caller really isn't who you think. To find out whom the caller is you will have to read the book. Believe me this book really kept me wanting to read more. I would highly recommend it.

Have you ever been betrayed by someone before? Well, Karen, the main character, gets betrayed by someone really close to her in Call Waiting. This is a mystery book written by R.L. Stine.

The book Call Waiting is about a girl named Karen who is dating a guy named Ethan. She suspects that her boyfriend is cheating and lying to her. Also, they stopped hanging out. Then Karen starts getting creepy phone calls saying that they are going to kill her. Everyone thinks that she is making that up so she can get Ethan's attention. So is Karen lying or telling the truth that they are going to kill her?The theme in Call Waiting is that there is always going to be somebody who is going to betray you.

I recommend Call Waiting to people who like mystery books. The reason why is because you don't know what's going to happen next. The author tries to confuse you.

I haven't even finished it and I hate it!!!!

Oh puh-lease! What a horribly-written book! You know, this is proof that R.L. Stine should stop writing so quickly. He doesn't concentrate and notice the junk that he can create! Okay, I'm not dissing Stine, but this book was horrible. The story didn't even make sense. I bought it becuase I read a review here and someone said "a person who calls a victim before going to kill them" or something like that. Well, I picked it up without reading the back and when I did read the back, it made no sense! I don't know if anyone noticed this, but everyt time that killer SUPPOSEDLY called her, Karen always returned to Ethan saying, "Oh, Ethan! It was him! He had such an ugly voice! He said he was going to kill me!" I think that's pathetic. She can't even lie well. I obviously know how this ends from reading all these reviews (Thank you readers for keeping me from continuing this junk!) so I'm just going to read the end. I haven't even finished this book, and already it's one of the worst books I've ever read. I recommend NOT getting it. Thank You. :)

A Good Solid Primer On Bird Photography

This is a very well written book on bird photography. Included are a wide assortment of the author's photographs which he uses as examples of the concepts and techniques he describes in the book. While it's true that some of these tips are pretty universal, such as how to set up for shooting in your backyard, there are some techniques I had never heard of before. Proper use of the equipment is also a pretty valuable part of the book. I would say it's one of the top 3 bird photography books I've read so far.

Great read on photographing birds

Another great book on bird photography. Mark goes through the whole process of choosing a camera and accessories with much up to date information. Many of his photos back up the information he is bring forth and are of high quality. Mark has several ideas for setting up an environment for photographing birds in your backyard and also what to look for when visiting a nature reserve. His post processing and sharing of photos is also covered. Reading his guidelines for working in the field are another reminder of how to approach photographing birds without stressing them should be required reading before leaving the house. A must addition for your information shelf. JerryJ Olympia WA

Excellent

Tina Chanter is a philosopher of the highest rank. She's never gushing in her praise of philosophers, even those she undoubtedly admires, e.g. Irigaray, Derrida, Heidegger, Levinas, etc. Quick to point out that "no one can see it all," she highlights the strengths of various philosophies while also identifying pockets of weakness. In short, then, Tina Chanter is inordinately meticulous, rigorous, intelligent, and well-read - impressively so. Make no mistake about it, however, Tina is thoroughly engaged in the Continental tradition of philosophy, and for some less careful readers, that may mean adopting a dismissive attitude before ever coming to an understanding of that rich, and worthwhile, intellectual tradition. I do not wish to conflate Postmodernism with Continental philosophy, but in this volume, Tina deals heavily with post- aspects. As already mentioned, however, Tina adopts an ever-critical position to those she reads, and in this case, she finds significant merit in so-called postmodernism. Chapter 4, "Feminist Epistemology: Science, Knowledge, Gender, Objectivity" provides, in fact, a rather extraordinary defense of postmodern philosophy and is excellent for not only its discussion of feminist concerns, but also as an exegesis of postmodern theory generally. If you come to the table skeptical of postmodernism, I'd recommend a thorough and careful reading of Chapter 4.

But let's focus on the main event: "Gender" - which is perhaps a misnomer headline for the book, given that Tina convincingly argues that categories like race, class, sexuality and gender can never stand alone, i.e. one "category" cannot be understood without understanding the others. It is thus that Tina discusses Fanon, for his phenomenological account of Negro embodiment (and not just Fanon); postcolonialism for its association with Third World feminism; Marxism for a discussion of class oppression; and, of course, poststructuralism, for its insightful intersectionality. The breadth and detail of what's covered is impressive, to say the least.

The back cover seems to suggest that this text will be useful for undergraduates pursuing feminist, gender, and philosophical studies. I'm almost a bit skeptical of these claims, however, because Tina indeed presumes a good deal of previous knowledge with these areas. The chapter titled, "Psychoanalysis, Postructuralism, and Deleuzian Responses," for instance, is almost entirely indecipherable without at least a solid, baseline knowledge of Kristeva and her use of Freud and Lacan. I have no doubt that she did not intend it this way, and she goes to some lengths to explain Kristeva, but this is nonetheless not an ideal introduction. Fortunately, her chapters can be read as stand-alone essays, so if the reader is unfamiliar with a given aspect of feminist philosophy, s/he can simply jump to another chapter. Regardless, I think that approaching this volume without at least some previous experience might make for a rather difficult, slow-progressing read. It thus seems the ideal text to use in intro to gender or feminist philosophy courses, where an instructor can help clarify and fill in any necessary background knowledge.

In summary, this volume is simply excellent for its breadth and insight, but it might provide some difficulties for first-timers. Highly recommended.

I agree with the previous positive reviewer - Tina Chanter is extremely smart and a great writer. I am a college student and found this book to be absolutely necessary reading. I highly recommend this book to anybody interested in gender theory. College students especially NEED this book.

Natasha Allegri is a writer, storyboard revisionist and artist, and comic book artist. While she originally wanted to just make comic books, she is most well known for her work as a storyboard revisionist for Cartoon Network's Adventure Time. She lives in Burbank, California and works two cubicles down from Andy Ristaino at Cartoon Network on the hit show, Adventure Time. She has a cat named Pancake, who she frequently features in webcomics on her blog, Pancake Pancake Pancake.
