About the Author
JAKOB ARJOUNI was born in Frankfurt, Germany in 1964, the son of acclaimed German playwright Hans Gunter Michelson. He wrote numerous books, including the novels Chez Max and Magic Hoffmann, which was shortlisted for the IMPAC Award. But it is for his series of five mysteries featuring the Turkish immigrant detective Kemal Kayankaya for which he became best known. Bestsellers throughout Europe and the winner of the German Thriller Prize, they have also been turend into wildly popular movies in his home country. Arjouni died from pancreatic cancer at age forty-eight in January 2013.
ANSELM HOLLO is the author of more than thirty books, most recently the essay collection Caws & Causeries and Notes on the Possibilities and Attractions of Existence: New and Selected Poems 1965-2000, which received the San Francisco Poetry Center's Book Award for 2001. His translation of Pentii Saarikoski's Trilogy received the 2004 Harold Morton Landon Translation Award from the Academy of American Poets.

The first Kayankaya novel

The Erg�n family is troubled. Vasif Erg�n emigrated to Germany from Turkey and worked as a garbage collector before he became involved with some shady characters. After his death, his son-in-law, Ahmed Hamul, followed in Vasif's questionable footsteps. Vasif's wife is the backbone of the family. His son Yilmaz is bitter that his father preferred the company of Hamul. Vasif's daughter Ayse has problems of her own, problems that other family members try to hide.
Now Hamul has been stabbed to death, his corpse unceremoniously dumped behind a brothel. The police aren't excited about the death of a Turk, so Hamul's widow, Ilter, turns to private investigator Kemal Kayankaya to find her husband's killers. Kayankaya's investigation is hampered by uncooperative family members, unhelpful police officers, and sinister figures who threaten his welfare.
Happy Birthday, Turk!, the first of Jakob Arjouni's Kayankaya novels, is a fine example of German noir. Kayankaya is a hard-drinking, easily angered outcast, an orphaned Turk who, although raised as a German citizen, endures the daily bigotry of Germans who don't like his dark skin and non-Aryan features. Kayankaya's intelligence and biting wit do nothing to ingratiate him with his fellow Germans -- not that he tries to win friends. More often, he tries to win fights with his powerful fists.
The plot of Happy Birthday, Turk! is tight and filled with twists that are interesting if not entirely surprising. The pace is swift. I admire writers of crime fiction who don't waste words. Arjouni captures people and locations (and food) in a few perfect sentences. A waiter: "He reminded me of a gay hippopotamus." A living room: "All it needed was an open drain, and the place could have been cleaned with a garden hose." Arjouni isn't Raymond Chandler, but he has his own distinctive style. Happy Birthday, Turk! isn't my favorite Kayankaya novel, but it is a strong start to an excellent (if short-lived) series.

German Noir

I stumbled on the four Kayankaya mysteries written by Jakob Arjouni searching for essays by the poet Anselm Hollo. While I was aware that he had worked as a translator, I had no idea these translations existed. And while this volume, for example, was translated in 1987, the same year the book appeared in the original German. I couldn't find a previous English language publication.
The back cover says that this is the second book in the series, but the publisher's web site identifies it as the first. Whatever, it is interesting to see how other cultures translate a genre that originated so squarely within the confines of a single country: the United States. The short answer on this German noir: fairly well.
The plot is too stereotyped noir to bother mentioning. None of the characters in the book are particularly virtuous, with the exception of the client, but the characters society expects to be the most morally reprehensible (immigrant heroin dealers) are more to be pitied than reviled, and it is those in power (particularly some police) who are simply evil. The component of the book that is original is the particular immigrant community (Turks in Frankfurt) and the use of language.
Most noir detectives are outside the magic circle because they are fallen (ex-cop being the most prevalent), drunks and disrespectful of authority. Our drunk of a disrespectful P.I. is most obviously on the far outside of society not because of these factors, but because he is the son of Turkish immigrants, raised in Frankfurt by a German couple after being orphaned as a boy. He doesn't speak Turkish, hasn't been to Turkey, and certainly doesn't feel any connection to that country. But in almost all of his interactions he is treated as an inferior. Nazism may be officially dead in 1980's Germany, but racial assumptions of superiority are alive and well throughout this book. There is a veneer of civility in his dealings with Aryan Germans, but it is thin and usually discarded within seconds of meeting our detective. Typical of noir P.I.'s he makes no attempt at sociability, and often jumps in to be rude (or violent) before the other has a chance to start things. This becomes old very fast, and the repartee between our tough guy and his adversaries is not up to even moderately good classic noir. And the fight scenes are very poorly described.
The other distinctive part of the book is its take on the flat though evocative language typical of the best in noir writing. There is a vitality in the language used early in the book. The author (and translator) were challenging the conventions of noir language to differentiate this book from earlier examples. "In the muggy air, jaws were tearing into breaded meat, lips smacking, vocal chords groaning and interspersing those noises with occasional speech. Tongues emerged to lick greasy chops." "Retirees peered into flaking entrance halls, licking the drool out of their wrinkles." By the the end of the book the author, and maybe the translator, are tired of the book and made no effort to construct a world with careful use of language. Instead the now tough guy P.I. is just smashing guys around in an all too predictable manner.
Melville House...any particular reason why you printed this not inexpensive book on such cheap paper?

Interesting, if a bit strange

There are any number of private eye novelists around, and I'm one of those people who are always looking for something different. This book, a first novel about a man of Turkish descent who works in Frankfurt, Germany, as a private eye, is definitely different. It comes with the usual trappings of a detective novel, but it's a good story nontheless.
Kemal Kayankaya is Turkish by birth but was raised by Germans, and has little left of his heritage. He works in Frankfurt as a private eye, and is very stereotypical: he drinks too much, fools around with prostitutes, cracks wise when he would be wise to be serious, and is doggedly determined to solve his case. In the current installment, a Turkish man has been murdered and his wife thinks the police have no interest in solving the crime because of his race. Kayankaya dives into the case face first, getting into fistfights, having a car chase him, and getting teargassed, in between pistol-whipping various suspects.
This is a good book: I would recommend it. It *does* have the dated feel that a lot of European stuff has in contrast to American movies and television. You always think they're looking to Chandler rather than Robert B. Parker for their inspiration. Everything's *very* hardboiled. That being said, this is a fun book.
