About the Author
Lucky has MBA in Finance from ESAMI, Bcom (Accounting) from the University of Dar-es-salaam, BTheology (USA) and CPA from the National Board of Accountants and Auditors of Tanzania. Prior to coming to ESAMI he worked with various reputable organizations as a Business Manager, College Bursar, Chief Accountant and Financial Administrator. He also taught at Nyegezi Social Training Institute (now St Augustine University in Tanzania). About the Author

Amit Kalani (MCSD, MCP) is a former technical manager for a Microsoft Certified Technical Education Center, where he designed and developed several courses on Microsoft Technologies (including Active Server pages 3.0, Visual InterDev 6.0, and Analyzing Requirements and Defining Solutions Architectures). At Excelda Manufacturing, he is deploying the .NET Framework for Application Integration and Web Development projects. He has been using Microsoft .NET Framework and C# programming language since it was first released after the Microsoft PDC in 2000. Amit has written MCAD/MCSD Training Guide 70-315 and MCAD/MCSD Training Guide 70-316.

I used this book almost exclusively to pass the exam yesterday. The most important thing to know is that if you studied for and passed 70-315 or 70-316, and then you study this book, you should have no problem passing the 70-320 exam.
A strong understanding of ADO.NET is a prerequisite, because this book does not review everything about ADO.NET that you'll need to know for the exam (but if you studied well for either 70-315 and 70-316, you should be fine). Of the new material, it is most important to have a detailed knowledge of .NET remoting and web services, including implementation, configuration, versioning, and security. This book goes into significant detail on these topics, and this is exactly what you need. There are a couple things missing, notably among security issues for web services, but this still should not significantly weaken your ability to pass the exam with just this book. It is also important to be knowledgeable of the COM+ and the XML classes, and these are covered well too. For COM+, the authors take the time to do it right, explaining the concepts clearly, and giving plenty of tools (such as simplified tables of attributes and class members) to get you familiar with implementation and configuration details.
As far as the topics of testing, debugging, deployment, and security go, Kalani has re-used a lot of his text from his prior Training Guide books. Much of it is therefore of a general nature which is a pre-requisite for the exam, but the exam focuses more on these issues as they directly involve the new technologies: .NET remoting, web services, XML, windows services, and COM+. It is important to know the details of how to configure all of these technologies, I think this is the biggest challenge of this material and of the exam. The book mostly covers these topics well, although there is a little bit of an unnatural split-up of material between the technology chapters and the deployment and security chapters. Also, I think the coverage of security for web services is insufficient, so hitting the documentation on that topic wouldn't be a bad idea.
I do not think the book is too verbose: throughout this whole series, Kalani certainly is not one to waste a paragraph saying what should only take a sentence, as some authors do. The writing is both concise and highly readable. But it is true that there is some "101" stuff covered about debugging and code access security, etc., as I said. For the main technologies, the rate of information is very good, I do not see that you could find much fat to trim in the text.
Now some people do not like simplistic, hand-holding labs, but these excellent examples have no frills, they are very concise and have little irrelevant code, so I found them very easy to digest very quickly. It is also good to see the important attributes and methods used in multiple labs, as this reinforces how and where to use them.
The exercises at the end of each chapter are important, because sometimes they make a point not covered in the text. And the chapter study questions are indispensable for highlighting key points, and whether or not they have sunk into your brain yet. In fact, the answers to the study questions are a more valuable review of the chapter than is the official chapter review blurb.
I notice now that the same author has an Exam Cram book on the same topic. You may want to consider that book, but I suspect that a book half as long will just be that much harder and slower to study than this book is.

This book will make you pass the exam!

This series is for sure the most popular training guide for Microsoft's MCAD/MCSD certification exams. Even after the release of a new generation of certification exams there are still folks (like me) who are still taking the 2003 exam for their own reasons. Let's see the most important pros and cons for this book:

Pros:

* Text: the text is well written and easy to understand. Very simple and clear vocabulary. It is not a boring reading.

* Guided Practices, Review Questionsand Exam Questions: there're plenty of exercises on every chapter, including 15 exam-like questions and some other review questions. I like books with exercises. It's a good way for the reader to measure what they've learned.

* PrepLogic software: gives a good idea of the kind of software you'll have to deal with on the real exam.

Cons:

* Code examples: as in most programming books code example tend to leverage for the beginner, sometimes lacking in code design.

All in all, this book is a sure shot if you're going to take the 70-315 exam as well as a good reading for ASP.NET newbies so don't hesitate to buy it.

Exam tips:

* be confident

* know your strengths and weaknesses

* don't rush the exam! there's plenty of time! in my exam there were 43 questions and 150 minutes for me to answer them!

If you are switching languages/environment, this is the book

This books covers everything you need to know to get a really good start in the ASP.NET, C# and Visual Studio.NET environments.

You won't be a guru when you finish but you will know how to create complex ASP.NET web pages and sites.

There is no fluff in this book, NONE. If you just scan it, you won't get the results you want. This is a hands on, do-it-yourself book. Which is one of the best ways to learn new material. I manually typed in most of the examples and learned everything I was hoping to learn. The examples are short and to the point and often have real-world benefits and tips.

The book is well written and extremely well edited. The editor, Ed Tittel, is a master editor because all the examples worked and they drive home, with just a few lines of code, the point the author is trying to make. Any errors in this book are nominal.

This book advanced my own abilities from struggling to grasp .NET to an advanced/intermediate .NET developer and has set me on the path to go as far as I want.

It took about 3 weeks to get thought the entire book, cover-to-cover, or about 150 hours.

    The author of the surprise best-seller French Women Don't Get Fat (2004) delves more deeply into her criticism of Americans' reckless consumption, encouraging them to eat for good health, for a slender figure, and for the happiness that springs from enjoyment of truly delicious food and wine. For Guiliano, worthwhile eating is inseparable from one's quest for honest pleasure. She believes most diets are self-defeating because they fail to appreciate one's need for the flavors and textures of good food; moreover, such diets tend to generate both poor nutrition and unappeasable appetites. Much more sustainable is a relaxed but intentional routine of three meals each day, where each mouthful gets savored for optimum delight. Avoiding snacks, especially ones high in sugar or salt, helps control appetite, as does regular drinking of water. Wine sipped with food, never by itself, also increases pleasure while providing some necessary nutrients, and cheese perfectly complements wine. Guiliano introduces a host of stimulating recipes emphasizing seasonal fruits and vegetables. Chicken cooked in pastis, leeks mozzarella, and figs with ricotta give some idea of the creativity at work here. Weeks' worth of seasonally informed menus ensure that even the most kitchen-challenged dieter can easily follow this Frenchwoman's generous, life-affirming regimen. Expect much demand. Mark Knoblauch

    Pretentious and outdated... but the recipes sound good

    While the first book was a home run, this follow up is redundant, pretentious, and smells like an attempt to make another buck off the "french women" franchise. If you already purchased French Women Don't Get Fat, you can skip this one. The author frequently contradicts herself, and the only worthwhile part of the book are the recipes, which are aren't formatted well in the kindle version. Much of the non-recipe content is repeated from French Women Don't Get Fat, but taken out of the original context, it does not work.

    Mireille begins by complaining that Americans have been using the entire leek to make leek soup, instead of buying twice as many leeks as necessary and throwing out the supposedly inedible green part that we've obviously been eating without any ill effects. If she wants to throw out fresh food that she paid for, that's her prerogative, but there's no good reason not to eat the green part of the leek. You just need to be patient and cook it longer, to soften the tougher fibers. So use the whole leek, but boil your soup for at least an hour.

    Then, in the same breath, she denies that her diet is entirely based on portion control and criticizes Americans for eating a whole banana at once instead of nibbling on half and saving the other half for later. The first book pointed out legitimate shortcomings of American vs European lifestyles, and in the context of our huge restaurant portions and pie eating contests, portion size is a topic that needs addressing. That's fine. What's not fine, is telling me I need to train myself to subsist on such a strict reduced calorie diet that I'm not allowed to have an entire banana, and then trying to convince me that Europeans eat like that. After spending a semester in Italy, I can assure you that the average Italian--who are thin on average-- eats quite a bit of rich food. They don't get fat for two reasons. 1) the food quality is superior to ours, with no artificial additives. 1.5) they're not afraid of dietary fat. 2) they walk or bike everywhere in very hilly terrain.

    Somebody needs to tell Mireille that the "low fat diets are healthy" thing came from America, not France, and was debunked over a decade ago. Extreme reduced calorie diets are also American, and were also debunked. For a French Expert, she is alarmingly clueless. The first book was a hit, but at this point, she's obviously just saying whatever to milk the diet industry cash cow.

    A quote form Henry Thoreau, "Live in each season as it passes; breathe the air, drink the drink, taste the fruit, and resign yourself to the influences of each. Let them be your only diet drink and botanical medicines". This quote places the entire book, "French Women for All Seasons" under the umbrella of our going green way of life - to keep things local, seasonal and affordable.
    Another quote which expands on "You are what you eat" - by gastronome Brillat-Savarin is, "The destiny of a nation depends on how it feeds itself". In a nutshell, living in the moment, enjoying the season you are in and considering your surroundings encompasses the high points of Mireille Guiliano's book.
    The book divides French habits from American. Where we Americans are all about excess and all-you-can-eat, Ms. Guiliano contrasts the differences. Eating just to eat or to avoid boredom, while tapping on laptops are not reasons to consume food. But those are rampant reasons to eat in America. In France eating is an event. Even sipping on coffee is pared down yet savored. Rather than a quad grande with extra whip, the French will partake in a demitasse cup of espresso and receive more gratification with fewer calories in more time.
    Montagne observed that gluttony is the source of all our infirmaries. Considering many Americans will eat, gain weight and go see a chiropractor to help their aches and pains, we are not that far from the truth. It's a proven fact that eating less, drinking more water and exercising daily will drop your weight, keep ills at bay and lead to better well-being. It's an easy equation and one we Americans avoid like the plague. Why don't we follow this routine? Why don't we take the stairs more than the elevator? Probably because we have so many options. Much like our excessive food consumption, we have no idea where to begin. Mireille Guiliano gives us a formula of how to WANT to live differently.
    She breaks it down into seasons. What's fresh? What brings back memories of that season? How it's more economical and supports local growers. Lots of yummy reasons to live in the moment and enjoy the season we are in.
    Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter are all addressed here. Guiliano discusses what is in season and what to look forward to year after year in that season. Harvest soups in the fall have a certain smell. A certain feeling comes from being cold and getting warm from the inside out.     The author to read if you want authentic French ideas

    I started with French Women Don't Get Fat and loved this book. It was not a "diet" book but a mind modification as to how to eat a smaller amount and be just as satisfied as if you had an enormous plate full of food. I ordered French Women for All Seasons, and am enjoying it as well. Although given the two choices, I'd go with the first book. Mireillle Guilliano is an engaging author with many anecdotes about her life growing up in France and living in New York. Her recipes are simple and delicious. Yes, some of the ingredients are not easy to find in the Midwest, but most are. She stresses eating the fruits and vegetables in season at that time, and finding quality fruits and vegetables at local markets instead of supermarkets.
    I've read one book by Anne Garonne and found it less than informative. If you want authenticity, read M. Guiliano's books. I also ordered her cookbook, but haven't gotten to it yet.

    Great product, but i don't use it entirely how it is intended.

    Love this envelope system! The envelopes are nice and thick and slide easily into a wallet or small purse. However, if I were to choose to fill out the check register like you are supposed to, I would be buying these every couple of weeks which completely defeats the purpose of the whole system, since it is to save money. What I do is I label each envelope and put my allotted amount of money in each one and I don't worry about recording it in the check register part. When the money is gone, it's gone. I suppose if I really wanted to know how I was spending in each category I could always put the receipts in the envelope and record it somewhere else later. So far, this system has worked great for us and we haven't gone over budget even once in the past 2 months - which is saying a lot for our family!

    First of all, congratulations to write a book on NServiceBus.

    This is my first time ever, I sit tight for couple of hours and completed a book in one shot (other than the Crime/Fiction Novels). The book presentation is perfect. It elevates readers experience & knowledge on NServiceBus step by step, perfectly. There was long time complaint about NServiceBus Documentation & Manual (other than sample code & few online articles on its website), I strongly believe this book going to end those criticisms.

    This book is primarily targeted for hard-core developers on how to use NServiceBus. Finally, this book turned out to be a little more than a product manual. If any additional patterns discussed on this book along with other advanced component implementations, it would Mark[ed]AsComplete book.

    Finally, if you are working on NServiceBus or planning to work on NServiceBus, it is highly recommended to keep this book on your bookshelf as a reference book.

    Useful, but short

    Learning NServiceBus contains nearly all of the information you need to get going with NServiceBus. However, it's a very short book, and in a lot of cases you can find very similar information for free on the particular website.

    There's nothing wrong with this book, in fact it is well written and the examples are quite useful. However, it only gets three starts because I don't think it is great value for money.

    Unfortunately, out of date. This book appears to cover NServiceBus 4, but the current version is 5 (and moving fast toward a version 6).

    As cool and effective as it is, NServiceBus goes through syntax makeovers constantly. So even if this book is dead-on for version 4, being a version back is a serious shortcoming.

    About the Author
    Dr. Alpern has performed research in the area of epithelial physiology, focusing on the mechanisms and regulation of acid transport. He received his MD degree from the University of Chicago and then trained in Internal Medicine at Columbia Presbyterian. Following postdoctoral training in the Cardiovascular Research Institute at the University of California, San Francisco, Alpern joined the faculty at UCSF, then moved to the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School as Chief of Nephrology and later Dean of the medical school. He is now Dean of Yale School of Medicine and Ensign Professor.

    Dr. Steven C. Hebert is the C.N.H. Long Professor of Physiology and Medicine at Yale University School of Medicine in New Haven, Connecticut, USA, and Chair of the Department of Cellular and Molecular Physiology. Dr Hebert’s research interests include salt and mineral metabolism, especially calcium and magnesium homeostasis, the renal handling of potassium, the diuretic-sensitive Na/K/Cl cotransporters and epithelial salt and water transport. Dr Hebert cloned and characterized the calcium-sensing receptor, the renal potassium secretory channel, ROMK, the thiazide-sensitive Na-Cl cotransporter and the loop diuretic-sensitive Na-K-2Cl cotransporter. Dr Hebert has served on the faculty of the University of Alabama, the University of Texas, Harvard Medical School-Brigham & Women’s Hospital and Vanderbilt University Medical School. Dr. Hebert was elected to the American Society for Clinical Investigation, the Association of American Physicians and the National Academy of Sciences of the USA. Amongst several awards, Dr Hebert has received the Carl W. Gottschalk Award from the American Physiological Society and the Homer W. Smith Award from the American Society of Nephrology and New York Heart Association and the A.N. Richard’s Award of the International Society of Nephrology. Dr Hebert has been editor, or on the editorial boards, of numerous physiology, membrane biology and renal-related journals. He is the author of over 260 peer-reviewed papers, reviews, book chapters and books.

    The book is a fantastic compilation of current and past research regarding a number of topics related to kidney physiology and pathophysiology. It is a tour de force often presenting many different viewpoints, which at times can be difficult to generate conclusions from.
