Exploring Family Theories

Exploring Family Theories presents a variety of sociological theories that explain "family".

A different sociological theory is presented in each chapter, along with examples that show how each theoretical perspective is applied to explain the dynamics of life in a "family".

This approach is an "applied" approach to the sociological study of family. Each theory is shown as set of ideas that one can use to interpret the situation, and thus, make sense of the situation. The Theories are the tools that one uses to help solve problems within families.

The theoretical perspectives in the book include Structural Functionalism, Family Developmental Theory, Symbolic Interactionism, Family Stress Theory, Conflict Theory, Family Systems Theory, Feminist Family Theory, and Biosocial Family Theory.

This book is very readable, clearly stated, and reasonably priced.

I bought this book for a family theory class along with another theory book. I found this one to be much better organized, easier to understand and more in depth than the other book required for the class. Most in our class felt the same way too.

Being an ex children's librarian, I find reluctant reader's especially boys gravitate to these non fiction books, great for sight reading, I have my kids say all the words on the page they know then we highlight them and peace them together. There are many little people boys as well as girls that greatly benefit from non fiction books geared toward them and the subjects they love.

Great, but the text is much more complex. The jump between reading levels 2 and 3 is dramatic.

We've bought a number of these to introduce our 3 year old daughter to non-fiction writing. The dolphins and sea turtles books are level 2, they're complex concepts but with mom or dad to help explain and discuss things while reading them to her its fine. This one however deals with the concept of migration, which even with mom and dad helping she just doesn't grasp. Its not the language thats the problem, but the concepts. Will be good when she's older.

I have bought around 30 of these Nat Geo books for my son and we read them almost every night.
This is the worst one I have come across. It's long and boring and only about Sperm Whales.
It should be called Sperm Whales. Yawn.

This is a great introduction to the type of thinking that scientists do. It helps my students see that they too are scientists, because they can do everything that scientists do. The photos are clear and charming, showcasing a diverse array of students engaging in a number of scientific practices. This book was a great way to launch our science curriculum.

This 2012 book is an excellent source of information and references covering the broad and complex field of cybersecurity. The two authors/editors address the two major perspectives - information and communications technology and legal and then address policy issues from each perspective. This balance between the two major components of any serious study of cybersecurity is most welcome. The subtitle is, perhaps, overly dramatic. The book addresses both the commercial and governmental aspects of cybersecurity. There is a focus on US law, however the book includes views from other country's perspective, as well. Eleven other contributors provided different views, yet their material was well integrated into the book. This resulted in a readable book where common terminology allowed concepts to be addressed from multiple perspectives.

The information and communications focus (Section 1, seven chapters) ably led by E. Gelbstein (Webster University, Switzerland) provides the technology view on cybersecurity, defining terms, describing technical threats, listing many useful web sites, and identifying the applicable international standards as well as consortia developed best cybersecurity practices. This reviewer is not a legal scholar, but the depth of information and references appeared to be significant. Anyone interested in developing or influencing policy on cybersecurity should consider this book a must read.

This large 493 page book (8.5 x 11 inch pages) is listed as "premier reference source," a term that this reviewer finds accurate. However, being the reference for a topic as dynamic as cybersecurity deserves a more dynamic medium than a hard copy book. This reviewer recommends this book become a web site (for pay if desired) that is maintained and expanded by these editors. What they have to tell us about cybersecurity is worth reading. Print quality for this is good as they used thick semi-gloss paper. The book is big and the artworks printed within are satisfying big as well.

Collected within this 224-page paperback are the sketches and drawing tips from 25 artists over the world. I've a lot of such books and this is an welcome addition to my collection because I only know 2 out of the 25 artists included. That by itself makes this a really worthwhile purchase for me.

After a 8-page introduction to location sketching and the tools, it features the galleries of 25 artists.

Each artist has several pieces of their sketches featured together with description and a short drawing tip. The tools and materials they used are also listed.

It's wonderful to see the beautiful sketches from all the different places in the world. Each artist has a lovely style and some of them are really good. This book will serve as a nice source of inspiration.

There are a few publishers for this book, namely CYPI Press, Gingko Press and Basheer Graphic Books. CYPI and Gingko should be distributing for USA and Europe. Basheer is distributing for Asia. The price of the book is going to different depending on where and who you buy it from.

Inspirational Guide to Seeing & Sketching

Inspirational! If you like to draw, want to improve your drawing skills or just get inspired to draw nore, thos is a great place to start! Yes, it is focused on urban sketching, but it offers so much more. Great comments from the selected artists about their own works, great range of styles. I wish I had bought it BEFORE I spent a month sketching in Germany!
