I have been teaching from this book and previous versions for years

I have used other books such as Element K. The problem with most of the other texts on this subject is that they give you more information than is necessary. Mike Myers gives very concise, easy to read information.
If you want to pass the CompTIA tests, and more important, get good overall knowledge about the IT world, this is the book for you!

All you need to pass, but you need some pre-understanding of computers

This is a great study book and highly recommend all of Mike Meyer's Passport books. After completing certifications for SSCP, CISSP, and Net+, and after reading a plethera of other books, these are hands down my favorite. These books are meant to be portable, so you can carry them with you. They are too the point, unlike many study books I have read that seem to waste hundreds of pages filling the book with useless infomation. Do I really need an explanation of what a mouse and keyboard is? Do I need to know what the power button does? CISSP books are very bad for this (Shon Harris being the worst offender). These books are bare bones data you need to know. That being said, all these books assume you have some sort of competitance with a computer. If you can upgrade your RAM, connect a router, or change out a graphics card, your good with this book. It must also be noted that this book is considerably thicker than prior editions; about 3x. This makes it a bit less portable. Also the Net+ book covers a bit more indepth on the networking side which may feel absent in this book. Over all the Comptia A+, Net+ and Sec+ are relatively simply exams and straight forward. You honestly don't need anymore than this book.

great resource

I have yet to take the test to certify, but I have confidence that this book has properly prepared me to pass it. The writing style is easy to read and even humorous at times. There is a Ton of information here, but its not too overwhelming. I like the short reviews and quizzes at the end of each chapter. The CD-Rom with the practice tests is also very helpful. This softcover book is a nice compact-ish size (about half the footprint of a full size textbook, although its still close to a thousand pages in total length.) There are quite a few black/white pictures. I bought the book because it appeared to cover the same stuff as some of the other choices but cost less. I am completely satisfied with this purchase.

About the Author
Ashuk Miah is an immigration lawyer who has been advising on immigration law for almost 10 years and has been involved in delivering ESOL lessons to students since it became a requirement by the UK Border Agency from 2009. In the informative yet humorous opening to this great little book, the author discusses the difference between whittling and carving. I would interpret his distinction as "a rose by any other name is still a rose": it's all about cutting away pieces of wood. The book, "Whittling Little Folk" is small in size but big in content! Eighteen projects in total, including two "step-by-step" figures provide examples, tips, and techniques to carve (or whittle) the cutest little characters you have ever seen. One of the "step-by-step" lessons, (creating Kristian, shown in the bottom left of the book cover,) has 42 steps, including photos, demonstrating the process. Very in-depth and easy to follow. My Ratings of The Book: Layout and Appearance: Good balance of photos, how-to instructions, projects. Thumbs Up! Instructions: Clear information and instructions Thumbs Up! Refsal provides us with 20 fabulous characters to copy as is or to add your own characteristics to. The illustrations and photographs are very clear as are the whittling and finishing instructions. So, even if you are a beginner you could have these delightful little people adorning your home. The Lumberjack, the Cop, the Baker and the Amish Farmers are just a few of the diverse characters that you can whittle away at and Refsal shows you how in step-by-step instructions. Have fun!

About the Author
Harley Refsal is an internationally recognized woodcarver. He is a professor of Scandinavian Folk Art and Scandinavian Studies at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa. He also teaches woodcarving at the North House Folk School in Grand Marais, MN. Since the 1980's, he has taught thousands of carvers his style of flat plan carving. He is the author of several books including Art and Technique of Scandinavian Style Woodcarving. His work has been featured in Celebrating Birch and in Woodcarving Illustrated magazine.

Barely Missed 5 Stars

First, this is a delightful book. With Harley Refsal and Fox Chapel Publishing, it would be hard to miss. Harley Refsal is the modern master of Scandinavian flat plane carving. His former books set the standard for flat plane carving. This one is no exception.
Most of the projects are small (under 4") characters, and they are totally delightful. For the first project (page 56), Harley presents a very simple fish, perfect for a first project for totally beginning carvers (or whittlers, as Harley calls us). In the second project, A Horse Named Tiny, Harley he has given us his take on the Dala horse, in a pocket-sized project perfect for a beginner's second project.
There are clear detailed instructions for carving and painting the first two little folk. The other little people are all variations of the first two characters, changing hats and clothing and stretching some of them about 115%. The painting really makes these little folks come alive, and it is super simple. I encourage everyone to make an entire village of these way cute little guys and gals.
The reason for only four stars is the first step-by-step project, Kristian. The pattern for the blank (page 23) is more like a generic man - there is no provision for hair or hat of any kind. If you look at the blank on page 28, you will see a blank with the proper amount of wood for the project. To try to get Kristian out of the blank on page 23 would be extremely frustrating to any carver, but especially for a beginning carver. Hence the missing star.

Not For The Absolute Beginner

First, I want to say that the book now includes the pattern for Kristian WITH a hat.

Now to the review. I really like this book. The characters are adorable, the book is packed with great and interesting information and should be included in every carver or whittler's library. The only reason I did not give it five stars is because of the content that is NOT included.

Any book that describes itself as being for everyone from beginner to the seasoned carver (see description on back cover and on Amazon site) should include a section for beginners. In order to carve these wonderful characters, you will have to know how to execute push cuts, paring cuts, stop cuts and v-cuts or you will be in for a lot of frustration. The closest this book comes to that is on page 56 when the author suggests that the beginner start out whittling on a stick or a carrot to develop a feel for a whittling rhythm. While this might be enough to get you started on the beginner project on page 58, the fish, it is not enough for you to do the characters you fell in love with when you "looked inside" the book on this site. You will need another source for that information, such as YouTube videos or an additional book. These cuts are not difficult to learn and will serve you very well in your whittling future.

Now, that being said, and being a believer in sandwiching the negative between two positives, I'll conclude by saying that you can't go wrong buying this book. It is a great deal at this price for the information provided. Harley Refsal is a treasure and his passion for these characters and this style of carving really comes across in his writing. I will always have a copy of this book in my carving library and plan to purchase other books by him.

Whittling Little Folk

I respect Harvey Refsal for his encouragement of the art of whittling and Scandanavian carving. This book falls short of the quality of some of his earlier publications. How Fox Chapel Publishing could have allowed this book to be published with the glaring error of a Pattern (Kristian) which did not match the instructions, is unbelievable. What are editors for? The pattern (which I followed religiously) is totally wrong and they have submitted an errata via the website of the magazine, Woodcarving Illustrated. Why not include an errata page in the book sold by Amazon for those who paid for the pattern. The errata on the magazine page has to be resized to match what was supposed to be in the book.

The photos of the "Little Folk" are cute and interesting to carve. I have to say that the photos of the step by step process are less than adequate for anyone who is picking up this technique for the first time. Interesting, yes....useful, probably not. You have to do a lot of interpolation to convert what is in this book into a successful carving....and I have been carving for a number of years. I would have given it a one-star rating had it not been for the clever designs of the "Little Folk".

She offers no quick fixes on how to grow old gracefully in a society that worships youth. Instead, she confronts the reality of aging. This proves to be less frightening and damaging than the denial and cosmetic fix-ups to prolong youth in a culture that places no value on age and provides no role for its elders. Make waves, make new roles, and reclaim old roles, admonishes Friedan. She interweaves the newest research on aging and psychology with her own personal experience of coming to terms with aging. A book that explodes the myths of aging--just as, 30 years ago, Friedan exploded the mirage of the contented housewife. American women's lives changed forever with The Feminine Mystique--and this challenging exploration of aging may do the same for the skyrocketing population of men and women who have hit 60 and can anticipate 20 or 30 more years of living. The problem, Friedan says, is that although only about five percent of people over 65 are in nursing homes and fewer than ten percent ever will be, age is seen--by media, doctors, politicians, academics, even activists on behalf of the aging--as a ``problem,'' a ``plight,'' a time of rapidly decreasing physical and mental faculties. Older people buy into that picture, straining to stay youthful or removing themselves from active participation in society, often by retiring to ``leisure'' communities, whether or not leisure is what they crave. Friedan produces research studies and anecdotal evidence that the ``Third Age'' (after growing up and then generating a family and/or career) may be the age of true creativity--even of evolution. She examines the tragedies of productive lives cut short by early retirement; the new myths of menopause; early preparation for death; and anxious overprotectiveness by family, friends, professionals, and government. In fact, the many resourceful older men and women cited here have found ways not only to sustain rewarding lives but to grow intellectually, emotionally, and even physically (Friedan discusses her own Outward Bound experience at age 60). That America's youth-oriented culture puts its elders on a social ice floe at a time when wisdom, experience, and honed critical faculties are most needed indicates, suggests Friedan, a nation with its priorities sadly skewed. The 'Cheerful' Side of Aging

Betty Friedan wrote The Fountain of Age as a journey to redefine age, and to demystify the age mystique. Each chapter stands alone as an essay, exploring the many tribulations of old age. She allows us to follow her on this journey, which she starts at the age of 60 with her own fears and denial of aging, and ends with the celebration of age.
One of the main themes that run through this book is that age is perceived only as a decline or deterioration from youth. This assumption has become so pervasive throughout the professional community and society, that Friedan finds older people believing it to be true, having all bought into the decline model of aging. She writes each chapter challenging this assumption, pointing out the injustice along with the solution, usually through social-political change. This is reflected in such chapters as `Denial and the "problem" of age', `The Retirement Paradox', and `A Paradigm Shift from "Cure"'.
In the `Denial and "Problem" of Age', one of the things Friedan finds is that media consistently leaves out any appearance of older individuals on television and in advertisements saying "The blackout of images of women and men visibly over sixty-five, engaged in any vital or productive adult activity, and their replacement by the "problem" of age, is our society's very definition of age." She goes on to say, "Clearly the image of age has become so terrifying to Americans that they do not want to see any reminder of their own aging." She realizes the image of age was viewed as one of decline and deterioration, a mystique, not of desirability, but of trepidation. Growing old has almost become unspeakable, which stems from our obsession with youth.
Friedan takes on the ageist ideology of corporate America in the chapter `The Retirement Paradox', saying at sixty-five or even before, older workers are forced into retirement, If not by law, then by social expectation, when many still want to work, and still have one-third of their lives still to live and be productive. Declaring this a great injustice to older workers, Friedan believes we don't have to continue to be structured in terms of lifespan of the past, suggesting that companies who are smart enough to adjust to the increasing population of older workers will be able to harvest enormous talent.
In `A Paradigm Shift from "Cure"', Friedan believes the assumption of age being likened to sickness or debility keeps the medical community and even the elderly themselves from dealing with the symptoms of legitimate illnesses. The role of functional assessment is important in treating the elderly, saying, "A new version of the old-fashioned family doctor, trained to treat the whole person, is what is needed." She goes on to say "Doctors and nurses must go beyond medicine's two traditional goals: " to cure disease and to prevent disease." Their goal now has to be to preserve and improve the quality of life for the older person." For Friedan, the paradigm shift is one from the passive medical model of care of the elderly to actually controlling their own age.
Friedan undertakes issues that haven't truly been addressed before, so as a gerontologist this book is important to me. She opens our eyes to the social implications the decline model holds for our elderly, and the paradigm shift that needs to take place if we are going to look at the abilities and qualities that may develop or emerge in men and women in later life, and contemplate new possibilities for their use.
Going beyond, or the transcendence of age is how Friedan concludes her journey. Given the new possibilities old age holds, she believes the elderly have to be pioneers of a new kind of age. She found these people all across the country, applauding old age instead of dreading it. She sees old age as an opportunity for a new beginning, a new horizon, to do the things you never had the chance to do before. These people were continuing to evolve and grow into their new age. Those who originally were searching for the fountain of youth, found the fountain of age instead.

an encyclopedia of aging with the readability of a novel

Everything you wanted to know about aging but didn't know to ask. Encyclopedic in scope, every conceivable issue surrounding age, personal or political, is covered. The book stemmed from Friedan's personal journey in facing her own aging and therefore covers well the personal and introspective issues that may be left out of a book devoted to the "problems" of aging. The overall theme is one of aging as a necessary and to-be-relished stage of life, with its own tasks, rather than being simply the end of life. There is much repetition of material from one section of the book to the next, which is sometimes distracting. However, each section and each chapter is a stand-alone essay, giving the work a value as a reference. Awesome. Inspiring.

Not too popular a book

The fact that there is only 1 customer review on this tome of a book does not diminish its importance. It simply validates what the author is saying about people denying they're getting older. My zen book comforts me: For the ignorant, old age is winter; For the learned, it is harvest. Since this book was published Friedan has written yet another book, an autobiography. I am impressed with her vigor and intelligence.

Good book for my voice lessons

King Cole rules forever!

I loved this documentary. It was very candid. It profiles Nat's triumphs, but doesn't shy away from the tragedies, either...it captured the life from beginning to end of this larger-than-life entertainer on video, and I loved the clips of Nat singing the songs. It was a little sad to see some of the celebrities who were close friends of Nat's had since died years after this video was made (Frank Sinatra, Mel Torme, Ella Fitzgerald) but I still enjoyed watching it. Even though they were friends of Nat's it was obvious that they were still in awe of him, as they should be.
Nat King Cole, in my opinion, was the greatest singer that ever lived, and he was a wonderful jazz pianist (even though after 1948, he played the piano less and less). The video goes into a lot of detail, whereas other Nat documentaries somehow leave you wanting to know more. Also featured are interviews with Freddy and Evelyn Coles, Nat's siblings, Maria Cole, Cole's widow, Natalie and Carole Cole, Nat's daughters, jazz pianist George Shearing, Harry Belafonte, Eartha Kitt and Quincy Jones. Also very moving was the final tune, "Stardust", undoubtedly the best version of that song ever recorded. When you heard Nat's voice, footage of his funeral was shown. I honestly broke down and cried, I was so affected.
NAT KING COLE: UNFORGETTABLE is an excellent look at what made this man and his music so special and beloved all over the world. Obviously he made a colossal impact, because his music is still selling, perhaps even better now than it ever did when he was alive. Seeing this video plainly shows why. It is a must-have for Nat's fans, and also makes for a wonderful study in African-American history. Highly recommended.

Grade 1-3?From Pangaea to recycling, Gibbons skims the surface of geology, touching on plate tectonics, volcanoes, earthquakes, and climates. Simple, full-color drawings illustrate the concepts. While some parts of the diagrams are labeled and arrows are used to indicate movement, there aren't enough captions to explain some of the geological processes depicted. Also, two of the three examples of sedimentary rocks, which are defined as "...most of the time...made from fragments of rock that have been stuck together," are not made from rock fragments; limestone and chalk are both made primarily from pieces of shell and bone. Joanna Cole's The Magic School Bus Inside the Earth (Scholastic, 1987) provides similar coverage in a livelier package, while individual topics (volcanoes, rocks, etc.) are covered in any number of titles in the "New True Books" series (Childrens) or in books by Seymour Simon. Her explanations of the earth's interior are enlivened by comparisons (magma is like molasses; the thickness of the outer core is "about how far it is" from New York City to Miami), and her plentiful pictures, with their sharp outlines and broad blocks of color, will help clarify the concepts for the youngest learners. The book closes with an explanation of the three categories of rocks. A good introduction to the planet, though a bit more explanation of how scientists learn about the earth's interior would have been welcome. Mary Harris Veeder

Great book for all ages!

I bought this book for my 6 year old granddaughter & read it to her. She really loved it! By nature she is very curious about science and nature and really appreciated the clear explanations and graphics (as did I)!

Brilliantly done!

My son was having some issues when it came to learning about the Earth, and understanding all of it's layers.
We loved this book! It was very easy for my son to understand the points, and he learned quickly what the school material had complicated for him. With beautiful photos, and excellent illustrations, I would recommend this book to anyone.

Paul De Grauwe, Professor, London School of Economics

Paul De Grauwe is Professor at the London School of Economics. He was a member of the Belgian parliament from 1991 to 2003. He is honorary doctor of the University of Sankt Gallen, the University of Turku, the University of Genoa, and the University of Valencia. He has been a visiting professor at various universities including Paris, Amsterdam, Berlin, Kiel, Milan, Pennsylvania, and Michigan. He obtained his PhD from the Johns Hopkins University in 1974. His research interests are in the economics of monetary unions and behavioural macroeconomics. His book publications include The Economics of Monetary Union (Oxford University Press, 11e, 2016) and Lectures on Behavioral Macroeconomics (Princeton University Press, 2012).

I bought this book hoping for at least a partially complete guide to NES games. It pretty much bills itself as a source of at least the important ones. It is BLATANTLY incomplete. Regarding the NES console it doesn't even include the rarest games (let alone important games or popular games) like Bandai's Stadium events which recently sold for $43,000 on Ebay. That should forcibly include it on any NES game list on a vintage price guide. These guys just included a few random (Id love to know if they used any criteria whatsoever to select, rate and price NES games) games with prices, some of which are way off the mark. It doesn't differentiate in terms of product sealed in box, in box, no box. Its about the worst guide ever. Sorry whoever wrote it but you just didn't put in the effort and your pricing is iffy at best. You have the Ninentendo Challenge Gold cartridge listed at $5,000 USD when everyone knows (and its widely listed) as the rarest and most sought after vintage video game of all time. DONT BUY THIS BOOK! IT SUCKS!

The Price Was Wrong (everywhere!)

I am an expert in the market for only a very tiny minuscule subset of the machines listed in this book. However, the prices on those machines were so ridiculously off on every single one of those, that I think it's safe to say this this is not a trustworthy guide.
